The film is about a teenager's journey to be loved and admired for what he is rather then what his parents want him to be. Apna Asmaan takes this story line “How far would you go to make your child a genius?” The film gives it the sensibility of an urban thriller, making it an entertaining yet
thought-provoking film about parents and their demands of their children.

Receiving accolades at Stuttgart Film Festival and also getting selected in the “San Luis Cine Festival International” which is held in Argentina, the unusual treatment and gripping story makes the film one of the most intriguing and remarkably different films of the year.

Talking about the story of the film, director Kaushik Roy revealed, “Though the story was a work of fiction, a lot of things were true”. The film is based on his own son Orko’s life – a mildly autistic slow learner. He further adds, “Orko had serious motor coordination problems where till the age of eleven, he could not hold a pencil properly to write A, B, C… Suddenly one day, he turned his handicap into his strength by starting to draw with bold, uninterrupted lines. This inspired me to encourage people to look beyond their weaknesses and parents to encourage children to pursue their own dreams rather than chasing their own.”

Panjuani, and veterans, Rajat Kapoor and Anupam Kher.
Storyline:
Ravi and Padmini share a strained relationship due to their teenage son Buddhi’s intellectual handicap.
Buddhi, a mildly autistic slow learner displays his flair for art but his parents, with their middle-class insecurities, neither recognize nor encourage his talent. Driven by Padmini’s social insecurities and Ravi’s guilt for dropping Buddhi as a baby, the parents chase an unreal dream of seeing their son as a normal, good student who, like others, must become an engineer or a doctor. While dr.
Sen, the neurologist, tries hard to make Padmini accept the reality, Ravi’s accidental meeting with Dr Sathya – the maverick scientist, leads him to the experimental “Brain Booster” that can make Buddhi a genius. The side effect of this unnatural drug reveals the dark side of their dream, something the parents had not bargained for.
Apna Asmaan is inspired by real life character called Orko – a mildly autistic 16-year-old boy who has overcome his intellectual handicap with his artistic talent. The film supports the view that in this world nobody is disabled, we are all
differently-abled.
