The film represents a milestone in the melding of Bollywood with Western cinema. It is also the first Indian movie to feature a Western actor in a lead role. "Ever since I left India after filming Gandhi, I wanted to participate. I can’t go back to India as a tourist. I can’t do it. I need to be creating or doing or telling a story in India," said Sir Kingsley. In Teen Patti he plays Perci Trachtenberg, regarded as the world’s greatest living mathematician, who befriends Bachchan, a shy fellow academic.

In Teen Patti, Amitabh Bachchan plays the professor who tutors five of his brightest protégées, played by Madhavan, Siddharth Kher, and newcomers Dhruv Ganesh, Vaibhav Talwar and Shraddha Kapoor (daughter of Shakti Kapoor) for high-stake gambling, but with a cause.

Produced by Ambika Hinduja the film was launched with Arshad Warsi but soon after the actor backed out, the role was given to Madhavan.

Synopsis:
Perci Trachtenberg (Ben Kingsley), widely regarded as the world's greatest living mathematician, meets Venkat Subramaniam (Amitabh Bachchan), a reclusive math genius from India, who has cracked a theory that could redefine the principles of probability and randomness.

Aware that he is on the precipice of an extraordinary discovery, one that could find applications across various sciences, Venkat is encouraged to test his theory in the real world.

But what starts out as an experiment between a charismatic young professor and an eccentric older one soon descends into a game neither of them can control.

Convinced that Venkat's discovery has the originality and significance to change the narrative arc of mathematics, Perci understands that Venkat's theory, in essence, questions the idea of what is random and what is fated.
