Ramgopal Varma's much touted film DEPARTMENT starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Rana Daggubati is a story of underworld and how a department consisting of special cops is summoned to tackle them. The film is 70 percent complete and slated to release next year. This is also comeback of RGV to his favorite genre.

SARJERAO GAIKWAD (Amitabh Bachchan):
Sarjerao Gaikwad is a politician who initially had his roots in a criminal back ground. Like Buddha he claims that he has achieved wisdom, which has changed his course of thinking from being a bad man to a good man. But there are many who don't believe that.
MAHADEV BHOSALE (Sanjay Dutt):
Mahadev Bhosale is the most feared name in the Mumbai police force. His mere presence sends out alarm bells of danger. A lot of criminals openly claim that they are more scared of his mind then his gun.
SHIVNARAYAN (Rana Daggubati):
Shivnarayan is a junior cop with just a few years' experience and he is generally vexed with the functioning and the operations of the present day police department. The only man he respects and looks up to like a brother is Mahadev Bhosale.
