Finally
India’s got their super-man. When will we see
the first superwoman come alive on-screen?
“I would love to be India’s
super-woman. Sometime ago, we were working on a
script with Shekhar Kapur, but the film didn’t
take shape. It wasn’t a super-hero or
super-woman kind of story, but it was an amazing
story for kids. In fact, I should him what’s
happening now.” |
|
|
You
already tried becoming a bat-woman, though?
“Oh, you’re talking about Halloween in
America. I was bat-girl, so I beat Hrithik to it.
I was dying to be part of Halloween; I asked SRK
and Abhishek but they told me to forget the idea.
I didn’t know whom to catch, so I caught Aryan
and Suhana, they were equally excited. They went
to papa SRK and said they want to be a part of the
parade. He was left with no choice, so we all
ended up going to a store to pick up our costumes.
Suhana was an angel. Aryan was this scary
creature; SRK also had this scary mask because
Aryan wanted him to look scary. Abhishek wore some
Samba dance mask that looked so funny. We went for
the parade, Suhana and I stuck to each other as we
were in our complete costumes, and we didn’t
want to be with the rest of them who weren’t
fully dressed. But then a man dressed as bat man
himself jumped at me from the crowd and
screamed…'Bat woman!!!' We fled from there after
that”.

Apparently
in KANK the bubbly, chatty PZ has a cold streak
for a change?
”Karan Johar is the King of emotions, and
he’s made me do the toughest role of my career
in KANK. In Kal Ho Na Ho I portrayed an unseen
part of my part of my personality, a downplayed,
non-glamorous girl. " |
|

|
|
She
continued, "But there was still a lot of Preity in
her. Riya has nothing of me in her. Karan would tell me
Riya’s stupid because she’s so correct, he made me
change a lot of the PZ characteristics for this role. At
one point I though he’s got me on this film, and I
almost told him - Leave me alone. Karan has completely
indulged me in the film. Once I wore this outfit and
told Karan it is stunning. He turned back and said,
“Good, take care of it because it costs more than the
location.” Sometimes you want to feel good about being
a woman, you want to dress in those amazing clothes and
flaunt it. Here I truly had the world at my feet truly.
If I’ve done anything wrong in KANK it’s all my
fault, and if I’ve done anything right it’s all
thanks to Karan.”

You’ve
been complimenting Rani a lot in your interviews, was
Karan instrumental in helping you‘ll bury the hatchet?
“There was never a problem with Rani, it was
only media-generated. I want to say this for the last
time that I have a lot of respect for Rani as an actor
because she is a good actor. Rani and I were never best
friends; we never claimed to be best friends. The media
made us best friends, and they made us worst enemies. I
don’t understand these games. Rani and I are co-stars
with a great working rapport, and we’re lucky for each
other too. But off the sets I don’t think anyone has
seen us together. I don’t go to her house; neither
does she come to my house. We don’t party together.
Rani doesn’t like partying; she’s more of a home
person. We have nothing in common, whether it’s our
backgrounds or our personalities. The only people I hang
out with in this industry are Gauri - SRK,
Hirthik-Suzzane, Karan, Abhi, Bobby-Tanya, Ritiesh,
Fardeen-Natashaa. Tell me one occasion when Rani and I
were spotted together? Then how could people assert that
we were best friends? There is no friendship gone sour,
hence, people should stop looking into it. It’s all
frivolous media reports that have become the center of
speculation. The papers have only published stories
about fights on the sets of KANK, give us a break, we
are sensible adults, and we don’t need to have these
stupid fights to promote our film.”
With
such a big star cast, weren’t you intimidated or
insecure at any point?
”Do I look kind to get intimidated? I am in awe
of only one person - Mr. Bachchan. SRK is someone I
adore; he’ll always been King Khan to me. I did my
fourth film with Rani, and Abhishek is a buddy, my
fellow Aquarian. I don’t know why I should be in awe
of anybody; maybe other people were in awe of me. Just
kidding! Maybe if we had a newcomer on the sets, he’d
have an awe-factor.”
You
have the reputation of being the chatty one, but
apparently Abhishek can out-chatter you. Is that
possible?
”Yes, but now I won’t let that happen ever again.
He’s checkmated me a couple of times. I absolutely
adore him; I keenly looking forward to Jhoom Barabar
Jhoom.

There are three kinds of Aquarians in the film,
Bobby Deol, AB and me, and we’re similar in so many
ways. We have these conversations that hop from one
topic to another so fast that no one can keep pace
with us. I did one of my first films with Bobby, I
feel emotionally attached to Bobby. He’s a wonderful
human being. And I can tell Abhishek is someone I can
talk to about anything.”
Talking
about your recent visit to the Cannes - Lot of people
claim that Indian actors have no recall value for the
international celebs out there. Comment?
“Every year the Indian representation at the Cannes
is increasing, but frankly, the only Indian star
recognized at the Cannes is Aishwarya Rai. She was one
of jury members; she’s a spokesperson for Loreal,
hence she’s plastered all over there. There was
remarkable representation from Bollywood this year,
but having said that Cannes is not the be all and end
all of the world stage, it’s an important aspect.
Like they say - a journey of a thousand miles begins
with a step. I think every year we’re taking leaps.
We can’t expect to conquer Cannes in a jiffy,
Hollywood has been doing it for years.”
Many
actresses are vying to play the role of Rani of Jhansi
(Sush, Ash), wouldn’t you want to essay a classic
character like this?
“I would love to portray a warrior, because I have
it in my spirit. I am very athletic. But I don’t
want to portray a classic role just for the sake of
it. To be a warrior firstly you need to be athletic,
secondly, you are an actor you can act anything. So,
whoever beats whomever in the race for Rani Ki Jhansi,
I wish them good luck.” |
