| You
will definitely remember her as the girl who ignited your
screens with movies like Qayamat, Julie and Garam Masala.
The sexy, glamorous Neha Dhupia has shrugged off her image
for now, and we thought it would be timely to ask
her the reason for this sudden change.

Is
Neha Dhupia finally tired of doing bare-dare roles?
I’m
tired of anything that gets monotonous, laughs the
actress. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I am afraid of
marriage too. It might sound like a strange co-relation
but it is true. So many marriages are on the block because
monotony kills it.
What
then would Neha propose as a solution to breaking
marriages?
I
think we need to get a little conservative as far as
marriages are concerned, replies Neha. The lack of respect
and the idea of not treating marriage like an institution
is what’s killing it. We don’t take marriage as
seriously as we used to. Infidelity is treated like a
status symbol today, which is even scarier.

Her
last film Siskiyaan dealt with the serious issue of
rape, and strangely there has been a corresponding sudden
increase in crime against women, especially in Delhi
Comments?
Considering
that I am from Delhi, what I fail to understand is how
come Mumbai is such a safe place compared to Delhi. Here a
woman doesn’t think twice before stepping out during the
day or night, but in Delhi even in broad daylight it is
risky. When I was in college in Delhi, my parents used to
go out of their way to drop me, but the same parents have
given me the liberty to live alone in Mumbai. I think it
is the society and the mind set that makes a difference.
Because society is so skin starved, the frustration level
is high. It’s a lot of things put together illiteracy,
poverty, joblessness, and idle minds. It all ads up you
know. I can’t understand one human being terrorizing
another.

What
did Neha have to say to the oft-repeated accusation that
it was films like ‘Julie’ that incited men to commit
crimes against women?
An
influential film only helps prevent crime. Unfortunately
these films with messages are not taken very seriously by
the masses. The frontbenchers need to be given the message
and those are the only seats, which are empty in films,
which carry messages. As far as films inciting men to
commit rape is concerned, I think that’s quite a joke.
It’s not like rapes did not happen before ‘Julie’. I
don’t even need to say anything on that count.

What,
according to you is the solution to prevent crime against
women?
I
think we need harsher rules in society, says Neha at once.
It has to get a lot stricter. At the same time get liberal
in the sense let’s get a little open minded as far as
the society is concerned. Once you do that, everything
will fall into place.
