The film begins in 1954 and ends in 1965. The film is based in the Hindi film industry of the 50s. It is the story of two talented people. There is a writer- director
(Shiney Ahuja) who liberates an actress (Soha Ali Khan) from the stranglehold of a powerful actor
(Rajat Kapoor), and then begins to use her for himself. In the end, he realises the folly of his ways and atones for it. The film shows to the real life story of veteran actress Waheeda Rahman and a writer-director Guru
Dutt, the media romantically linked the couple during the era when Guru Dutt was directing great films.

| The film was originally titled as Bahut Nikle Mere
Armaan. Vidya Balan was approached to do the film but opted out of the film due to her prior commitments. The role finally went to Soha Ali Khan. Soha Ali Khan learnt Kathak under Nandita
Puri, studied Urdu and also underwent acting workshops to prepare for the role, which according to her is her most challenging role till date.

This is Sudhir Mishra's second film with Shiney Ahuja after Hazaaron Khwaishein
Aisi. Sudhir says that this film is based on his experience and is a tribute to the film industry and everyone who existed during the 1950s. "The characters of my film are not based on specific actors," Sudhir says. "But I have drawn references from the lives of directors and actors of that time," he said. The director also spoke to some stars from that era like Waheeda
Rehman, watched their films and researched their lives. Famous singer-actress of yesteryear Noor Jehan's granddaughter Sonia Jehan also play important role in the film.
