| often. Dad and I don’t live in the same house, but the respect and love I have for him goes beyond a father-daughter relationship. He’s more like a friend to me. He’s such a wonderful human being, I love spending time with him. Sometimes he’s more of a friend to me than my Mom. You know how mother’s can be strict and protective about their daughters, they can even pull our ears lovingly So I am little scared of her. With Dad I can tell him anything.
You’ve mostly worked with big directors; now you’re doing Imtiaz Ali’s new film. Is it because of the Shahid-Kareena casting?
I don’t have any qualms working with young, new directors. Imtiaz is a new, contemporary director who is bursting fresh ideas. I thought his first film Socha Na Tha, though made with a non-star cast at that time, was very convincing. I am not doing the film because I’m paired with Shahid. Not that I am
complaining. Ha, ha, ha.
Well, your screen pairing hasn’t worked wonders?
Yes, that doesn’t mean Shahid and I didn’t have chemistry on-screen. The script probably lacked fire. If the script has fire, you can feel the heat on-screen, too. This concept of real life couples sharing fiery chemistry on-screen is an outdated concept. I know on-screen pairs from yesteryears who did the entire film without talking to each other. And it was a roaring success.
There was a news report recently that claimed you walked out of Zoya Akhtar’s debut film only because Hrithik walked out of it?
I have no idea about this. I have signed a film with her, with or without Hrithik. I believe they’re changing the subject; if I am happy with the final story, I will do it as planned.
It’s rumored that Mani Rathnam’s Lajjo was offered to Ash first?
I have no idea about Ash being offered Lajjo. All I know is that Mani called me and offered me the film. It’s a dream project for me. Aamir is the only big Khan I haven’t worked with till now. For any actor to stand in the same frame as Aamir is like a dream. I think Aamir is India’s answer to Tom Hanks, in fact, I think he’s far superior to Tom Hanks.”
Have you interacted with this reticent Khan?
Yes, during the photo-shoot for Lajjo. I remember I almost trembled during the shoot, which is so unlike me.
Everyone’s talking about the fall-out between Priyanka Chopra and you? What happened to the old sparks of friendship?
It’s not like anything happened to our friendship. It is difficult to maintain friendships in this industry. Priyanka and I are acquaintances, though she’s great fun to work with. We did an interesting film like Aitraaz together, which worked wonderfully for us. We share a good on-screen chemistry too. C’mon guys, its 2007, all these issues about two heroines’s not getting along, fighting its all passe. All this would happen in the 80’s and 90’s. We’ve outgrown it now. Okay, even if we were friends, everyone is busy with their careers and lives, so it’s not big deal. One should not put stars to test and make judgments about them beyond this. All this is more media hyped.
Recently on a talk show you said the one actor you wouldn’t work with was John Abraham. He’s touted as hot property, though?
Honestly, there’s no answer to that. Everything said on Karan’s show could be counter-attacked and questioned. Its all said in good humor, I can’t react to it more than this.
Do you find it unfair that the onus always be on a star to react?
Tomorrow anybody from the rasta will stand up and say 'X star is a murderer'? Do we take that seriously? Let it be ... these are dead issues. Even the readers are smart enough to see through such biased viewpoints.
Also, if people say I'm arrogant, so be it. It comes with the territory. I'm never arrogant or hurtful to my fans and wellwishers, or to those in the movie industry I love. The rest don't really matter do they? |
