He’s not haughty about his accomplishments either. The actor turned 40 last month and is in a league of his own. This hottie at 40 was a lightman to a photographer prior to his stardom and fame and today, he’s one of the most photographed actors about town. He is certainly laughing his way to the bank. According to sources, the actor has been signed for a film for a staggering sum of somewhere close to Rs 41 crores. The film will be directed by Priyadarshan and produced by Venus.
Akshay's fan base in the overseas market is on the upswing is beyond doubt with all his films like Waqt, Bewafaa, Dosti, Garam Masala, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye and Phir Hera Pheri being consistently featured in the UK top 10. Gauging from his impressive track record and an ever-increasing fan base in the overseas market, the exhibitors feel that he is just infallible abroad. As one distributor very aptly remarked, "You can publish a phone directory with just his name and yet it would be a best seller. He is the superstar with the Midas touch at the box-office!"

Now this new development is giving sleepless nights to all Khans specially Shah Rukh Khan who counts heavily on his overseas market. Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan, both are formidable in their own right, genres and markets. While the two are best remembered together for their film almost a decade ago, Dil To Pagal Hai , they created magic once again in the more recent Heyy Babyy , when SRK made a guest appearance in the Akshay-starrer.

While personally they may be on friendly terms, professionally the two stars are giving each other a stiff competition at the box-office overseas. While SRK had become an instant rage in the overseas market with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge , and has been numero uno ever since, However Akshay’s emerging as the new star on the overseas circuit giving tough competition to the Khan brigade (Shah Rukh, Salman, Aamir and Saif) who have been ruling the roost so far. And with his recent spate of successes, Akshay’s begun a steady climb to the top and is fast catching up with the undisputed badshah.

Akshay’s certainly hot property in the overseas market today. His films have done extremely well both in India and abroad and box-office collections clearly prove that in the overseas market he’s one force to reckon with apart from Shah Rukh.

Sample this: Akki’s Heyy Babyy has grossed approximately Rs 5.58 crores in UK, as opposed to SRK’s Chak De which has grossed Rs 3.47 crores so far. Not only this, Heyy Babyy has also taken the biggest opening in the US this year and the biggest screen average (6,039 pounds) in the UK. With this Akki is touted to takeover as the ‘Overseas King’ with consecutive hits overseas.

There’s no doubt that Akki’s raced way ahead of a host of other actors in the overseas segment. A film distributor reveals, SRK has so far been the untouched king in the overseas market. But though that is quite unlikely to change soon, Akki’s popularity abroad is soaring. Overseas distributors with ever-rising prices are lapping up his films. Even his films like Dosti that have not done well here, have seen several houseful weeks abroad. So, that way he’s a super hit hero and has been consistent in giving hits.

Akshay has done far too many films and has not maintained the exclusivity that’s been one of SRK’s strengths. SRK has been very choosy, doing only one or two per year, as opposed to Akshay. Because of that the success ratio of SRK increased manifold and shot him into the superstar league way earlier, but what needs to be considered here are the banners. While SRK made it big, under big banners, Akshay has made it big on his own and it’s only of late that he’s started doing films under the bigger banners.

Both have the solid backing of good friends and enjoy quite a loyalty among certain filmmakers. SRK has Karan Johar who’s reportedly named his next film My Name is Khan, on good pal highlighting him as the contemporary educated Muslim. Not to be outdone, Akki has been backed by Vipul Shah, who’s film Singh is King shows him as the quintessential Punjabi munda. In fact, many feel that the film was titled to announce his claim to the ‘King’ tag. Many believe that the film will establish his status as the King. We caught up with the super star to clear the air and rumors about his ongoing rivalry with Khans.

You’re hailed as the No 1 today and talk is rampant about you being the highest paid actor and is giving sleepless nights to all Khans.
I don’t understand the No 1 business. It’s just a label on the shelf. It sounds cool but we are all products of marketing. I hate putting a number or a price on my work. I’d like to believe I am priceless. Once you’re No 1, the only way to go is down. And I don’t want the sun to ever go down on me. I want to be happening till I drop dead. I am happier counting numbers at the box office by giving back-to back hits. I am a down-to earth, real guy and that’s what connects me to my fans. I want to tell them all to be like me. There is no substitute for hard work. That’s where my success comes from. I want to keep on running and never reach my peak, because then you’re finished. At 40, I have just started my life.

You had very humble beginnings and today, you have it all — wealth, fame and success...
I am proud of where I have reached but my humble beginnings have kept me just that... humble. Our house was in the heart of India, Chandni Chowk in Delhi, and 24 of us lived in that house. It was big enough to make sure that everyone was comfortable. I had everything in that house — a whole lot of good wishes and people to learn from. I try to use their experiences in life and on screen.

You are so pressed for time with your hectic work commitments, yet you are a great father and family man...
I do four-five films a year. I manage my time well with the help of great staff. I have a hunger for work and it’s my choice to do so many films. No one is forcing me to. But I do make it a point to go with my family for three vacations a year.

How good looking are you?
On a scale of 1-10, I am a 10, but after three hours with my glam squad!

What do you love most about your wife Twinkle?
Can’t reveal that in an interview can I? But I love everything about Tina (Twinkle).

What does life look like from here on?
At 40, life is challenging and exciting. I let my films talk and hope that people appreciate my work and continue enjoying my performances.
