Katrina Kaif
“I don’t feel threatened by Deepika Padukone”

Katrina Kaif has bagged some of the biggest projects in tinsel town and is one of the hottest faces on the block. Just back from a long schedule in Australia, she has very little time to promote her new film Welcome.

Katrina Kaif in latest film welcome 01

Ask Katrina Kaif about Salman Khan and she breaks into a rash. Ask her about Akshay Kumar, ditto. Quiz her about the rumored bad vibes with Bipasha Basu and she wants to throttle you then and there. All hazards considered we catch up with a jetlagged Katrina Kaif to find out more about Welcome and her love life with Salman Khan.

Have you sorted out things with Salman Khan? It's said he was upset that you've signed on quite a few films with Akshay Kumar.
False. Nothing of the sort I know exactly how he feels.

He?
(Silence)

Do you mean Salman or Akshay?
You're not going to trap me into saying anything against anyone. (Frowns) I've wised up to media games.

Wonderful! There's a strong buzz that Salman Khan wants to marry you.
Wow! You have an overactive imagination.

Don't you always consult him before signing a movie?
It's believed that he thinks of himself as your mentor.
(Cryptically) I consult people who have been with me for a while now. I have a very good manager, Sandhya Ramchandran, whom I feel closest to and I also consult my director friends.

Trade talk is that Salman Khan wants to sign Deepika Padukone for his next home-production, Main aur Mrs Khanna. Don't you feel left out?
Honestly, I don't think you guys need to be so clever.

Clever? Hey thanks!
We can be equally clever. But we don't because we respect the journalistic profession.

Ahem, thanks.
Will you stop going thanks thanks?

You got it. So, I asked you about Deepika Padukone.
I'm not insecure of anyone. Deepika Padukone gave a good commercial performance in a film that's good commercial cinema. Whether the media likes it or not, I stand on my own. Thank God I am becoming a senior. Young faces will always come otherwise Bollywood will become stagnant. I don't stress over these things as I have already got much more than I had bargained for. In fact I believe signing a Yashraj Film marks a new level in my career. It's a high point in every actress's life and I am proud I have done it.

Okay what about the rumors that Salman is upset with you for signing a film with Shahid Kapur?
That film is not happening now. Rajkumar Santoshi is making another movie before that one.

Any actors you'd like to work with?
There are so many actors whom I can be paired with like Hrithik Roshan, but there hasn't been an opportunity. Abhishek and I looked good together in Sarkar and of course, there's Shah Rukh Khan, but I haven't been offered a film with him yet. I hope to work with them in the future; it's just a matter of time.

Don't you miss being a part of Sarkar Raj, the sequel?
No, I didn't have much of a role in the first one either.

Talk is that in Yash Raj film with Ranbir Kapoor you need to wear a bikini. Are you comfortable with that?
I think everyone knows that Yash Raj likes to keep its production details private. I respect and abide by that.

So what are you doing in a gangsta comedy like Welcome?
I'm the heroine element. My brothers, played by Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor, are gangsters and want to get me married off but keep scaring off potential suitors. Akshay Kumar comes into the picture; we fall in love and plan to change Nana and Anil into good decent guys.

That's so Mickey Blue Eyes.
It's very different. I love the sarcasm and wit of Anees Bazmee's movies.

Apparently, you didn't get along with Mallika Sherawat during the film's shoot.
I'm here to work not to like or dislike people. Neither am I here to win a Miss Congeniality competition. I maintain professional relations with my co-stars.

With your angrezi accent, aren't you being typecast as an NRI girl, as in Namastey London and Singh is King.
I don't think so. My diction and pronunciation have improved. Although I do take time to dub, I'm much more comfortable now.

Who is your best friend in the film industry?
My pillows at the end of the day. (Ha ha ha)

No buddies among your female colleagues?
See, if anyone feels threatened and insecure, then it's her problem not mine. Preity Zinta is the exception to the rule. I've never worked with her, but she's an amazing person, very straightforward. If I'm uncomfortable with anyone, I draw a line.

Knock, knock. Like Bipasha Basu during the shooting of Race?
What can we get on with next question?

Like it or not, after Om Shanti Om, Deepika Padukone is the Next Best Thing. Doesn't that worry you, since you're doing the Yash Raj film together?
Today, you can say what you want to. In another three-to-six months, you media guys will pull the Next Best Thing down.

Hey, and I thought you respected us journos.
(Darkens) I do can we end please? I have 10 more interviews to do today.

Apparently our little birdy told us that kabhi pyaar kabhi takraar phase is continuing in the Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif love story. She had barely landed in the city after a month-long outdoor of Singh is King in Australia and she was dragged off for the party that Sallu was hosting at his pad for his mom Salma Khan. Obviously, this was one do she couldn't say no to.

And then you know what happened? During the promo shoot at the hotel, Sallu was constantly calling her not to keep tabs on her but to tell her to wrap up the work soon. He was concerned for her health.

Seems she hadn't got over the jet lag yet and she was back to work. Giving interviews and promoting her film and of course, he also wanted to sort out their little tiffs too. They hadn't had much time together since her return home. So what did Kat do? She called for pack-up. No more interviews no more shoots. It was straight back to Sallu's Galaxy Apartments for the star.
