"Well, a lot of people say that I have made it too fast, but I think there should be a right time for things to happen. I have got to work with Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit and I always wanted to work with them so it's been quite a special journey, and I think good things have come to me because of my patience," says he.
The intense Rang De Basanti actor Kunal Kapoor, who picks his roles with utmost care, reveals that cinema is only one of his predominant passions. His other interest is writing poetry. The actor says poetry helps him express his inner feelings, which he is unable to do otherwise. "I find it very hard to talk about my relationships, whether it's a girlfriend, sister or just a friend. I can't bring myself to discussing them in public. That's where the poet in me surfaces. Poetry helps me to exteriorize my thoughts," Kunal says.
"I read and write a lot. I'm a struggling poet," he joked. "I've never shown my work to anyone else. I write it all for myself and I'm not interested in showing it to anyone," he added. Kunal's inherent shyness propels the poet in him to come to the surface. He writes religiously every day and has reams and reams of thoughts expressed in poetry in Hindi and English.
"I've been writing for the last eight years. I keep going back to them to check my own life. It's deeply cathartic. I don't want to publish it right now. Strangely, I'm not a loner. I like people. But I'm not much of a drinker and I hate parties. For me fun is being with people I trust and love and writing poetry."
One person Kunal adores is Jaya Bachchan "The minute I heard she is in Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, I was in. She has been an idol from the time I saw her in films like Guddi, Uphaar and 'Abhimaan'. To me, working with her was the biggest high. I never thought I'd one day be in the same film she's doing."
Are you aggressive in your real life too? “Yes. But I am not like Imran who goes on the road bashing up people and giving 'gaali's'. I am aggressive about what I want in life. I am aggressive about what's there for me to do.”
SRK has done it and so has John Abraham but when are we going to see Kunal Kapoor's six pack abs? “Wow! That's like joining the who's who of the six-pack. The truth is that I have a six-pack and the only six-pack I've had is...six packs of beer and I've also attempted a twelve pack. Now I am determined to try for a twenty-four pack now and I am going to outdo all these celebrities who've got six -pack (laughs).
On a more serious note, don't you think you are too slim? “No. I don't think so. I tell people that I am fit and not slim. But if any role requires me to grow twice in size, then I am most willing to do that.”
What have you learnt from the diva called Madhuri Dixit? “It may sound clichéd but one thing which comes across when you meet her is her humility. I've realized that bigger the star you become the more humble you become.”
Do you think Rang De Basanti has changed your entire career path? “Oh Yes! Aditya Chopra saw RDB and wanted me to be a part of his film. RDB was a landmark film and shaped my future. I remember during the making of RDB, I was so tired that Aamir Khan told me, "This thing happens only once in your lifetime" We put everything we had into
RDB.”
