Success works wonders especially if you your last few films don't work and if it's a solo hit, well, the joy knows no bounds. Emraan Hashmi is grinning from ear to ear. JANNAT has come as a breather for him, his career depended on how JANNAT fared. "I was hurt, I was angry after AWARAPAN," Emraan admits, "The film hadn't worked and people had written me off. I had to prove the detractors wrong. The lull that followed only helped. I wanted to come back with a vengeance."
And it has been a terrific comeback for the talented actor. Three weeks ago, the presence of Akshay, Saif and Kareena couldn't ensure a terrific start for TASHAN. Big B and SRK's presence in BHOOTHNATH didn't help the film open to full houses either. But the excellent start of JANNAT did catch the traders by complete surprise.
"I was shocked as well. See, what went in favour of JANNAT were various factors. The buzz was very strong. Plus, a promo with content or even an attractive poster grabs your attention instantly. The first jhalak counts and JANNAT benefited for the aforesaid reasons," Emraan added.
What about his popularity with the youth? "Everything falls into place if the film is good. And I always had the gut that JANNAT would click in a big way," he states modestly.
The film couldn't have been timed better to coincide with the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. "It was not deliberate, but it's good that the film was released during the IPL ... And I believe there is no harm in showing the black aspect of cricket," Emraan told in an interview here.

Get candid with Emraan and enjoy this straight from heart interview
Let's start with your latest release Jannat.
Jannat is a love story with the background of cricket and the dark alleys of the game. The subject is contemporary where heaven is all about money, luxury and crime.
Is Jannat deliberately released during the IPL?
It wasn't deliberate but it's good that the film was released during the IPL. Cricket betting is something that you can never put on check. And I believe there is no harm in showing the black aspect of cricket.
Why is that you always work with the Bhatts?
First they are my family and so I feel at home working for them. Secondly, the Bhatts make films that are socially appealing and different at the same time.
You said you would never kiss on-screen. But Jannat has two kissing scenes. So you are back to your serial kisser image?
Every actor kisses on and off-screen. But only Emraan Hashmi gets projected as a serial kisser by the media. Whether it is a joke or something serious, I am cool with it.
You have again paired opposite a new face. This time it's Sonal Chauhan. Are you comfortable acting with newcomers?
Yes. My directors are always hunting for fresh faces for me - Kangana Ranaut in Gangster, Geeta Basra in The Train and this time it's Sonal Chauhan. I am perfectly cool working with newcomers ... But Sonal has been into modelling, so she is already aware of camera positions, lights and a little bit of acting.

The songs of all your films are hits. What is the secret behind it?
Credit goes to my music directors, singers and lyricists. But at the same time, I'm also very particular about my songs.
What are the films in the pipeline?
Right now there is only one film - Raaz 2. It’s a horror film directed by Mohit Suri and Kangana Ranaut is the leading lady.
You’ll haven’t been known to be very cordial or friendly with Kangana Yet, you’ve said that you’re very easy to get along with when asked about working together again. Was that a statement of confidence or cockiness?
It’s not cockiness. Of course I get along with Kangana. There’s no reason why I wouldn’t. In ‘Gangster’, we got along just fine. She’s very easy going and chilled out. I don’t carry that baggage of being a star. I don’t know because I haven’t met her for a while now, so if she’s carrying that baggage, that’s her problem. I don’t step on anyone’s toes, I don’t get in anyone’s way, but if somebody gets in my way, then I’m very rude to them. But no one’s thankfully till now, gotten in my way.
Every actor has a shelf life? What defines it talent, the audiences, the market forces?
Hard work. I’d like my shelf life to be for the next 30-40 years but I don’t know. That’s unreal. It’s the ideal situation but you’ve got to live forever in the hope that it’ll run that far. Then again, my worst fear is probably next year, people won’t recognise me. I’m always thinking of the worst-case scenario. All you can do is put in hard work, and hard work. There’s always that element of insecurity in being an actor.
Did you perceive a difference in the behaviour of the industry people towards you in your low period?
Yes, there is a set pattern to it. Of course the first people to turn their backs on me will be the industry. That’s what my uncle Mahesh Bhatt told me in the beginning, and still tells me. No one is doing you a favour and you’re doing no one a favour. I don’t expect them to make a film with me if I’m not saleable.
What brought about the spate of rumours about things going wrong between you and Praveen? What kind of effort do you put into the relationship?
I think it’ll take another five years for me to get used to the fact that we’re married. Though marriage is more demanding than just being in a relationship. She’s never put that extra load on me. It’s actually easier on me to come back home to Parveen. Right now, post marriage, I can concentrate on my work slightly more.
Is the romance quotient the same and how hard do you have to work at it?
Thankfully, the quality of our romance hasn’t diminished. I’m a fun loving guy I keep it going. At least I try. You have to keep working at it to keep the fire burning you have to. |
