The glam mag covers that she’s shot for are also very much the real Sonam, she says. “What you’ve seen in Saawariya, or will see in Dilli 6, are characters that I’ve played but what you see on the magazine covers is what I am in real life,” she asserts, adding that she’s a bit of a fashion freak.
“I’ve always been interested in fashion and have known Anamika for ages. I can easily associate with and carry off her clothes well.”
But apart from the fashion stint, Sonam is also excited about the success of Slumdog Millionaire, the international film that features her dad, Anil Kapoor, and is doing well in the international film festival circuit. “I haven’t seen the movie, but even dad is surprised at its success. In the movie, he plays a negative role,” she says. And what about Mr India 2? “Isn’t it still a rumour that the movie’s being made? For me, it can be made as successfully as the original only if Shekhar Kapur directs it and the original cast is there. And to replace Mogambo is going to be very tough.”
As far as her films go, she’s doing only Dilli 6 and “has a life” beyond films. That includes romance – and link-ups, we assume. What happened with Ranbir? “What happened? Nothing!” Then what about rumours of the affair and then the break-up? “Ranbir is one of the closest friends I have. Why is it so difficult to digest that a guy and a girl can be friends? If he has a girlfriend, that doesn’t mean that our friendship will change.” The other link-up, of course, is with Kunal Kapoor.
“Oh my God! I understand why I’d be linked with Ranbir, but why Kunal? I’ve met the guy twice on the sets of Dilli 6, don’t know him, don’t hang out with him and haven’t spoken much to him. I’m sure he must be a nice guy, but where do the rumours come from? And please, I’m not going to date anyone from the industry,” she shoots back.
But why is she still single? “Where are the men? You must tell this to the readers – I am single and very much ready to mingle!”
When asked about her second film Dilli 6 co-star Abhishek Bachchan she said “Abhishek and I are very well-matched, height-wise. Though he is very mischievous, I find him very mature,” says Sonam, “While Ranbir is someone I've grown up with; Abhishek is someone I can look up to as a co-star. He's really cool.”
Dilli 6 also stars yesteryear beauty Waheeda Rehman and Sonam say that both she and Abhishek are totally smitten by her. “Abhishek and I, and our director Rakeysh (Omprakash) Mehra are so much in awe of Waheeda Rehmanji. During rehearsals every time she reads a scene there's pin drop silence for a few minutes. We're all busy staring at her,” she added.
The legendary Waheeda Rehman feels Sonam resembles her. “When people, including Waheedaji herself, said I look like her, I feel I'll just faint with pride.”
Recently Sonam turned down an offer to play a lead for a very big banner. But the actress says she has no regrets. “The role was extremely sensuous. That's fine. But it also required a lot of nudity and there was one major lovemaking scene. It was a smashing opportunity for me to go beyond what I've done in Saawariya and my second film Dilli 6. But I can't do anything that I'm not comfortable with.”
“Because of my dad everyone treats me like a child. I can't be doing any role that would make my father, mother and the rest of my family cringe at the premiere. Call me a prude, but that's that way I am. My father has a 40-year reputation in the industry. And I'm not going to tarnish it,” says Sonam with seriousness.
