But times has changed now and today Emraan is in a position to say no to none other than his mentor and uncle Mahesh Bhatt. Recently he has refused to shoot a remixed promotional song for Vishesh Films' next Raaz: The Mystery Continues, since he feels the song doesn't suit his character as portrayed in the film.
According to sources, "The Bhatt camp decided to shoot a remixed song of Oh Jaana, originally picturised on Kangana Ranaut and Adhyayan Suman in the movie. It is a very young, lively, romantic song, shot for Adhyayan where he is falling in love with Kangana. Being a peppy, romantic song, the production team decided to remix it and use it as a promotional song."
The source continues, "The Bhatts decided to use this romantic song as a promotional video. Emraan was an obvious choice for the video. He turned down their offer as he felt this song was in contrast to his character in the movie. He has a dark side in the movie and his songs are more Sufi-ish with a reflective feel. Oh Jaana is a love song picturised on Suman and Kangana and he just felt out of character shooting for this song."
"Emraan has shot for a couple of promotional tracks for his earlier films which turned out to be chartbusters. He doesn't want to break that trend and is getting selective for shooting the song," adds the source.
Emraan says, "We have already shot two songs and I was sceptical regarding Oh Jaana as it is a romantic song, which is contrary to the character I play in the movie. The director and the people related to the music wanted me to do the song but I play a totally different role."
Emraan Hashmi to move away from erotic thrillers:
“I’ve redefined the Emraan Hashmi brand because I was getting very repetitive with both my look and roles,” says Emraan Hashmi Emraan admits he finds good guy roles very boring. “I like dark characters because they’re full of mystery and depth.” The other change he’s made is that he’s not kissing like in the past. “Thankfully, not all those films in which I kissed did well. I don’t understand why, in Bollywood, you have to repeat something like that in every film. Just because an actor does something in some of his films, it doesn’t mean he has to do it all the time! All I can say is, you will not miss the kiss,” says Emraan.
He’s also been doing a lot of films with the Bhatts - is that a conscious decision? “I have done seven films with the Bhatts and I’m comfortable with them because they’re family. I don’t care what others think about it because I do films I believe in. I’ve done films with others too, but most of my successes have been with the Bhatt camp. We’re a team and it helps me in my career. I will be doing at least two films with the Bhatts every year,” says the actor.
And even when the biggest of stars are doing only multi-starrers, Emraan’s doing only solo films. What gives him that? “I find solo films are more risky and I love the challenge of that gamble. I’m glad I’ve been successful so far.” The actor has now Raaz 2 ready for release where he plays the lead.
