Sharing her experience on the stunts and martial arts performed in Chandni Chowk To China, Deepika said she got herself a chronically sprained ankle. “The stunts in Chandni Chowk To China were tough. Fortunately I got no broken bones. But I got a twisted ankle, which will remain with me. My left ankle will remain sprained for all my life.”
“I sprained it once while rehearsing and then I sprained the same ankle at exactly the same place twice again. Luckily it’s not a fracture. But I can’t sit cross-legged or sit on my hunches… I can’t do anything that requires me to put my weight on my left leg,” she said.
Being from an athletic family, Deepika always wanted to do an action film. “Yes, I always wanted to do an action character. I’m glad I got an opportunity. Akshay Kumar was a fantastic co-star. The way he comes on the sets and goes through the scenes of the day and the way he improvises, is tremendous.”
Deepika is doing the maximum endorsements. Last heard turned down the Nakshatra diamond deal after Aishwarya Rai's contract ended. They finally had to go to Katrina Kaif. What is the truth behind this? Says Deepika, "I don't know who else they went to. But they did come to me. And things didn't work out. I'm as selective about my endorsements as I am about my movies. I'd definitely endorse brands that I believe in. I'd like to represent brands that suit my age. I'm endorsing the Signature brand for Levis, Kingfisher airlines, Tissot. I'm good at time management. That comes from being a sport person. I started travelling at a very young age. That taught me to be punctual. Sometimes one has to wait for things to happen on film sets. That's okay. There're so many things to be taken care of. So no, I don't get irritated by delays on film sets.” adds Deepika.
So what irritates Deeepika? "People who lack common sense and who lie. Otherwise I'm quite tolerant."
On her new look:
A designer from New York, Jai, has designed my look for this film. This is his first film and it was very challenging for him to design this look. Not only did he design one action look, but also another, which was quite, a traditional Indian look. I would not take name of my character but he has done justice to the look. Credit should also go to Mallika who did my make up which completes my look. Most of the people are not comfortable of carrying this look but we managed it. I am getting positive reactions for it and more than that I am quite comfortable in carrying it.
On performing stunts:
When you are doing actions, risk is always involved in it. I had not been a part of an action film before so I had no clue what all it involved. I actually injured my ankle and then I injured it thrice at the same place. However it is a part of our profession and when I took up this film I had to be mentally prepared myself that I am going to do a film like this and injuries were going to happen. We had a trainer from Hong Kong who has worked in films like Matrix, Kill Bill and many others. He used to be present on the sets for all the stunts. Everyone is always scared whether they are performing the stunt on ground or in air but you have to be confident and be sure that the minute a director says action, then you have to be sure about what you are doing and then go for it. If you are not sure … that is when you get injured.
On her training before filming:
I trained for about six months with my trainers who came from Hong Kong. It was an intensive training session for 8 hours a day. However it was completely worth it because when you are shooting in place like China you need such training. Moreover when we were shooting there, China went through a cold wave. So you can imagine how we would have managed! Rohan used to come on the sets whenever there was any action sequence to make sure that I'm alive for next days shoot or not!
On her co-star Akshay Kumar:
Akshay and I have one interesting fight sequence in the film. I am really looking forward to seeing that as I haven’t seen it yet. I have learnt a lot from him. He has done some amazing action sequences before. He actually taught me that action is not about painting your body or being aggressive. It is like a dance so it just about being graceful and that is how we have done some wonderful fight sequence together. He is wonderful dancer too but zindagi main ek hi baar mauka milta hai Akshay ke saath action film karne ka aur mujhe woh mauka mila so I am thankful for that. Yes I like to believe that main next Akshay Kumar hoon.
On Anushka Sharma who is the next debutant opposite SRK:
Actually I know Anushka as we both started together in Bangalore as models. I think she is really fortunate and I really hope that her career will shape up very well like me.
