But, Aditya Chopra became irritated when he came to know that Karan Johar was planning to shoot the film on the same locations in Philadelphia, USA, where he had just finished shooting for ‘New York’. Karan even sent his crew members to the same hotel in Philadelphia (hotel Aka) and hired the same local location managers for the shoot of his film.
Sources from the Chopra camp say that Aditya Chopra’s worries about his film ‘New York’ comes from the fact that in Philadelphia and New York, whosoever shoots for a film, would ultimately go for the same landmark places, whether wittingly or unwittingly. And this will give a very similar look to both the films, which would be detrimental to their success at the box office.
However, Karan Johar camp has an entirely new theory for their reasons to come to shoot in Philadelphia and New York for the movie. A source says that Karan had initially zeroed in on London’s underground tube stations for the shoot, but British Govt. did not grant the permission for it, and he was compelled to shift somewhere else.
Another factor, which influenced Karan Johar’s decision to shoot at the same venues as Aditya Chopra’s film, was the smooth sailing for Aditya’s film during the shooting. After being denied permission to shoot in London, Karan did not want to waste his time in scouting for other locations and thought it convenient to follow in Adi’s footsteps.
The stories of both the films have two main protagonists who run into each other without knowing that one of them is a terrorist. This negative character of a terrorist is being played by Neil Nitin Mukesh in Aditya Chopra’s film ‘New York’, while Vivek Oberoi enacts the same character in Karan Johar’s yet- to- be named film.
Karan’s film has the hot pair of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan in the lead and is being directed by Rensil D’Silva of ‘Rang De Basanti’ fame, while Aditya’s film boasts of John Abraham and Katrina Kaif in the lead under the able direction of Kabir Khan of ‘Kabul Express’ fame.
When asked to comment on the ongoing face off between the two powerful production house heads Karan had this to say "Just because the two films are shot at the same location doesn't mean they have similar subjects," Karan Johar currently in the U.S. sets the record straight, "Earlier, they said KAL HO NAA HO was ANAND. Then they said DOSTANA was I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY. Why should we copy movies? Can't we come up with original stuff?"
Karan continues in the same breath, " Do you think we would go to the extent of choosing the same story? Just because the two films have the backdrop of terrorism doesn't mean they are similar in content. Going by this logic, even DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAAYENGE, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, MOHABBATEIN and RAB NE BANA DI JODI have similar stories since they belong to the same genre."
Well that still doesnt explain the new moves made by Karan , all his films from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ to recent ‘Dostana’ have been distributed by Yashraj Films, but not any more sources say that Karan have dumped YRF in favour of UTV.
Karan has entered into an agreement with UTV to distribute his upcoming films starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor as well as Ayaan Mukherjee’s ‘Wake up Sid’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma. The deal is said to be for a whopping Rs 78 crore and UTV Motion Pictures is very happy to be associated with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions through this mega deal.
The insiders from Chopra camp say that due to heavy losses in their recent projects, the Chopras were not very keen to go for huge investment to buy these films. And this gave Karan Johar an opportunity to go for a deal with UTV Motion Pictures, who have been waiting for such opportunity.
It may be recalled that Karan Johar has a very good rapport with Chopras both professionally as well personally. And so, Karan Johar’s move towards UTV is bound to take many by surprise. But then… showbiz is … cut throat business…you know!!
