Akshay Kumar is ruling the headlines these days. Kambakkht Ishq has hit the bull's eye at the box office by grossing Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) in the first week despite unfavourable reviews - and Akshay Kumar is having the last laugh. But he insists that he has no inclination of being the 'king' of Bollywood and is content playing a 'clown' for his audiences.

"Really, ever since the time it became loud and clear that Kambakkht Ishq had succeeded amongst the audiences, I'm being asked if I'm marching towards the top again. My reply to them is that I'm happy living and dying being where I am and that's anywhere but on top," says Akki.
The pressure's finally off him, especially as his last two films (Chandni Chowk To China and 8x10) put a dent in his long-standing hit record. Talking about the nay Sayers, he said, "I know they definitely had a whale of a time with this one, didn't they? What to do? I can't force them to be nice to me and I'm not the type to put a gun to anyone's head; so let them be. I have faith that my audience will come and prove my work's worth. And this time they surely have and I love them for it."

You've got to give it to the actor on an average, he has three-four releases in a year; his films rely mostly on mass appeal and the battering by critics doesn't affect the outcome of his films. He is in the right mood after the celebrating the splendid success of KI right time to get candid with the actor…

The critics trashed KI. Were you expecting it?
Yes, the critics panned it. Sometimes I understand it because it is not a critic-friendly film. Some films are critic-proof. They do good business despite what the reviews say. That's because such films always have an audience. Whether it is good or bad, it's the kind of film people want to go and watch.

Is it true that Sanjay Dutt is feeling sidelined in the film Blue?
This Sanjay Dutt thing has been going on and on and on. Have you heard me ever talk about it? I don't have any problems with anyone. We have finished the whole film. It's over and done with.

Do you think other actors in Blue felt threatened, as they know you will do better action?
Maybe... There may be points like that. But I finish about 4-5 films a year. I don't have the time to get into all this.

You love taking risks your wife doesn't stop you from going ahead with this madness?
Earlier, she used to tell me! But now she's okay. I don't know if she's putting on a brave front for me or if she really believes it but she says, "I know nothing will happen to you." Maybe it's because I have done two-three films with her and she has seen me do that kind of action and has faith that I can do it.

You are perceived more as a moneymaking machine rather than a serious actor. Comment.
I can't help perceptions, but I deliver. See, if today, a producer comes to sign me, he is not doing it just to waste his money. A lot of times, I have been accused of 'robbing' producers but anyone who doesn't want to sign me, won't do so. If a producer believes that he will get his money back, only then will he sign me.

Why aren't you producing more?
I did Singh Is Kinng and Namastey London. I am also producing Patiala House and another film with John and me in it.

How much do you really interfere in the selection of the leading ladies for your films?
(Laughs) I love to interfere in every department of filmmaking. They don't let me.

Any favourite heroines?
Kareena and Katrina.

Is Katrina in your home productions?
I don't know... the scripts are still being finalised. The directors will sit and decide.

Do you worry about getting old and looking bad in front of the camera?
(Long silence) Well, I am 42 and I don't want to be working in this line throughout... If I do it also, maybe I'll do character roles. Or maybe I will just leave it all and go away.

How can you do that? You are a total workaholic!
I am a workaholic but I have done enough work, and I am financially secure enough to stop working when I feel like. It's not about money. It's about keeping yourself occupied. And I work more than any other actor but sometimes I just feel like I should leave now.

Why?
(Ponders) Maybe not now but in two-three years...

That's not too far away.
I don't know but I feel that way sometimes. I am not saying I will quit acting. But I want to give a lot of time to my son.

Not planning another kid?
Not yet. My sister also lives with me and her daughter is like my own daughter.

Will you ever direct a film?
No. I'm too scared to even consider that.
