| Almost every Friday, a new girl makes an entry into big, bad Bollywood – but not every new face manages to make it to the top. There is something very magical about Deepika Padukone. It’s been almost two years since ‘OSO’ hit the screens and she’s already considered among the top league of actresses. For sheer freshness and beauty, Deepika would put a blushing rosebud to shame. Little wonder then that she’s managed to capture the heart of the handsomest man among the new generation of actors. She’s sensible and practical, and speaks her mind. And when she doesn’t want to, she doesn’t speak at all. |

The struggle is generally tough for female aspirants when they start their innings in the film industry. But for Deepika, it’s been a relatively easier ride. “Yes, the journey has been quicker but it’s been as easy or as difficult as it has been for anyone else,” she states, “I think it’s a mix of talent, hard work and luck. I believe for an actor it’s very important to be real and to be in touch with reality.”
Much has been written and said about Kareena wanting to do her role in ‘LAK’. Even Saif admitted to that in an interview he also said Kareena was very upset when the director chose Deepika. This would have definitely put the ‘OSO’ actor in an awkward situation. “Not at all,” she disagrees and explains it, “I know that Imtiaz was always sure of whom he wanted for ‘LAK’. In fact, Imtiaz offered me this film much before ‘OSO’ had released. So somewhere it gave me the confidence that he wanted me for this movie even without seeing the performance in my first film. If I were in Kareena’s place, I would probably react the same way.”
Has she ever discussed this with Kareena? “No. I don’t need to discuss anything with Kareena because I know with what intentions she has said it. I’m an actor myself. So I know what she must be feeling. Even Saif didn’t mean it that way. He meant it as a boyfriend who’s in love with his girlfriend. He didn’t mean it in any disrespectful way towards me.”
Posts ‘OSO’, there were some sections that insisted that her success was thanks to Farah and Shah Rukh Khan. There was a bit of awkwardness between her and Farah for a while. Farah claimed that Deepika had not maintained any contact with her after ‘OSO’. As a result, Farah didn’t even speak to her for some time. So how did the patch-up happen? “There was no reason for a patch-up because nothing happened between Farah and me,” she states sounding surprised, “As soon as ‘OSO’ released, from the very next week, I started shooting for ‘Chandni Chowk to China’. And later I was out of the country for six months to shoot for ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’. And then ‘Love Aaj Kal’ happened. Post ‘OSO’, there was no way I could have kept in touch with Farah apart from text messages or a phone call.”
Some people from the industry went to the extent of calling her vernacular just because she comes from a middle-class family. Does she think they were just trying to take away her credit? “This is shocking,” she seems unprepared for it. “I’m proud of the fact that I come from a middle-class family, and brought up with great morals and values. I want to lead this middle-class, simple life for as long as I can. I would like to touch base with reality.”
Talking about co-stars and rivalries, , there was this fierce so-called competition between Deepika and Sonam Kapoor. It eventually led to Sonam saying a few things about her too. Does she feel people put both of them in the same bracket because their films clashed with each other? “Obviously, we came in at the same time. We are also of the same age group. So comparisons are bound to happen. It’s because the so-called new generation actors have come in. As long as I’m true to what I’m doing, it doesn’t matter. She’s doing her own thing,” Deepika cleverly justifies.
Having started their careers together, does she feel proud of the fact that she has raced past Sonam? “I wouldn’t pay much attention to that. I think people have put me at a particular position is because they think I deserve to be there. I’m still doing the same thing that every actor does – be it films, endorsements, interviews and photo-shoots. But I guess people choose to put me there.”
Recently, Asin made a dig at her when she commented that Deepika was an experienced actress too (since she’d done films down South) so why did people not object to her getting the best newcomer award? Was she hurt by such comments? “How am I experienced down South?” she questions. “I’ve just done one film there before ‘OSO’. That’s because Farah asked me to do it because I got the offer and ‘OSO’ was going to start much later. So Farah thought it would be a good thing for me to gain a little experience without wasting time. It was a good learning experience because I had never been to any film set or assisted a director or been around film people to understand what filmmaking is all about.”

Most heroines have a problem discussing their love lives. But from the time she started dating Ranbir, she’s been quite open about it. Is that how she always wanted it to be like? “There was no conscious decision that we wouldn’t talk about the relationship. We just felt that time it was the right thing to do. We have only admitted to the relationship. We haven’t given out details of it,” she informs.
Is Ranbir a romantic? “Very romantic,” she reveals for the first time. So what’s the most romantic thing he’s done for her? “I wouldn’t be able to tell in print all the non-materialistic nice things that Ranbir has done for me. But in a materialistic way, I remember casually telling him once that I wanted to learn the piano, and he bought me one.” Okay and what’s the most romantic thing she has done for him? She thinks for a while and naughtily chirps, “I don’t want to remember the things I have done for him. Why don’t you ask him?”
Having an actor as a boyfriend – has it ever put her in an uncomfortable situation with other heroes? “Not at all because we trust each other completely,” she states. “Like I said, it’s nice to be with someone whose dream and passion is cinema. He’s extremely driven and passionate about movies. I think, at some point, he would even direct a film.”
So, do the lovebirds always discuss cinema or something about their future plans? “It’s a major part of our conversation, but apart from that we do try consciously not to talk about just work but other things as well.” Marriage? “When we feel the time is right, we just know,” she says calmly.
Of late, Ranbir has also been linked up with some actresses, not to forget the report that paired him with Katrina Kaif, after which Salman called him to clarify as well. How does she cope with such situations? “I know my man. I also know that he’s sure of what he wants from the relationship. He gives me the security. I don’t need to call him to confirm things whenever I read anything about him. But if there’s anything for concern, we do talk about it. Sometimes even without me asking him, just the way he looks at me, I know what he thinks or feel. We share such a beautiful relationship.”
For girls who’re from outside the industry, the initial period is the most distressing. Has Deepika ever felt like she didn’t belong here? “I’ve never felt like Oh my God! What have I gotten myself into? I’ve never felt like ‘I can’t handle this anymore’. It’s just been a beautiful journey from the time Farah offered me ‘OSO’ till today. A lot has happened. Things have been moving very fast. I’m enjoying every moment of it. The most beautiful part is that I’m learning so much so fast that I can’t wait to learn more,” she says sounding content. Deepika is surely on the rise and there are many more worlds to conquer. With her single-minded determination, it should be a cakewalk.
