You are not turning your back to romantic films your next release is “Dil Bole Hadippa”, in which you are teamed up with Rani Mukerji.
Now ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ is a complete contrast to ‘Kaminey’ with a lot of ‘bhangra-shangra’ see at the end of the day, I do want to do different kinds of work and find acceptance in all spaces. It’s just that I’m not willing to restrict myself to a particular genre, especially in times when change is the order of the day. I would tell people to carry their brains when they come to see Kaminey and leave their brains at home when they come to see Dil Bole Hadippa.
What was it like working with Rani in the film, especially since you worked with her before you were an actor on a Pepsi commercial?
Yes, in fact I kept teasing her on how I was a model and she this big star and I'm getting to act with her. She used to get really annoyed. She says you're my hero now so behave like a hero. The thing with Rani is that she is genuinely a complete heroine. She's a great dancer and a fine actor and is in the best shape ever for this film, she's really worked very hard. I had fun working with her but didn't feel like I was working with a contemporary, obviously. She made me feel very comfortable and it was more of a learning process for me.
After the success of “Kaminey”, you are considered in the big league of actors.
I am happy that ‘Kaminey’ worked for me and I am also aware about the fact that post the success of the film, there are also lot of expectations from me. Still, it’s early days for me to begin celebrations. There are many more movies that I have to do over a period of time. I have to continuously prove myself. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Is Shahid Kapoor making the famous Khans insecure?
Everyone seems to be saying that, but I keep reminding myself that it has only been six years for me in the industry. Of course, I’m extremely happy to be even considered a good enough candidate. For someone who is just 28 years old, I feel very privileged and fortunate to see such confidence from my audiences as well as the industry.
What did you think of Love Aaj Kal, it's been directed by Imtiaz Ali who directed you in Jab We Met?
Unfortunately, I haven't seen it yet. But I would really like to see it and am looking forward to seeing it. I have a lot of expectations from it as I think Imtiaz is one of the most talented people I've worked with.
The general consensus is that, though it's a bigger hit, it's not as good as Jab We Met.
I've heard a lot of mixed reactions but I feel Jab We Met is a film that happens and people shouldn't put that pressure on Imtiaz. It's very difficult to live up to a film like Jab We Met, though as a director in the long run I'm sure he will prove to be better than what people judge him on the basis of Jab We Met to be. Those kind of films don't come everyday, even as an actor I'll be fortunate if I get one or two more love stories as good as Jab We Met. Some films just become very memorable and Jab We Met has become one of those films.
Every single fan of yours is very concerned about your single status. You have been linked to Sania Mirza, Amrita Rao and now Priyanka Chopra. It seems they really just want to hook you up?
I feel people think I'm a very sweet guy, so let's just get him married and settled. But I'm in no hurry, when love has to happen it will happen.
Why don't you just put everyone out of their misery and tell them the name of your girlfriend, why this sudden secrecy?
Maybe at some stage when I have reached that point of comfort I will talk about my personal life. I wouldn't really make an effort to hide it. I had a really public break-up and it can come in the way of your normal day-to-day life, it becomes too large to manage. So, that is the reason I became really private and will stay that way.
