Certainly, the year 2009 may not have been a very fruitful one for Bollywood, but it has definitely seen Katrina consolidate her position as the numero uno actress. Yash Raj's New York was not only the first universal hit of 2009, but it also won her a lot of praise and accolades for a subtle and serious performance. Then came a surprise cameo in Blue and her punk look in the film was the talk of all the youths who thronged the theatres to have a look at the diva, even in a seven-minute appearance. However, the best is yet to come. November opened with AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, which carried a tremendous hype and turn out to be runaway success.
Katrina’s look in the film was an instant hit with the youth, Katrina wanted to look like a teenager in the flick and this fringe hairstyle, came in handy for the actress. As a result of that, she looked cute and believable as an orphaned girl brought up by strict foster parents. The playfulness needed by Katrina Kaif’s character of Jenny in the romantic comedy, came out very naturally on Katrina’s firang face with fringe hairstyle. At the end of the day, not only Katrina Kaif’s new look became hit with the audiences, but the movie, too, took a record opening at the box office.
The collection of the film is at par with the movies of bollywood biggies like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan. The film has already been doing excellent business, favourably comparing to the opening of Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’ at the box office. The grapevine is abuzz that Katrina Kaif’s lucky charm works at the box office not only with Akshay Kumar, but also with Ranbir Kapoor, as proven by the super success of ‘Rajkumar Santoshi’s flick.
Earlier, she could not dance or sing and did not speak Hindi, but she reinvented herself to play girlfriends in commercial films. "I am the girl in the tank top and the short skirt who you could take home to meet your mother," say’s the gorgeous actress.
She added: "Becoming a film star in India has been a dream come true but you do always have to put on a performance, so sometimes it is good to get away. That's when I head back to London. I can walk down Finchley High Street and no one recognises me. I certainly can't do that in Mumbai or Delhi."
She is Google’s most searched Indian celebrity but Katrina say’s the constant media glare on her personal life still rankled her. The 25-year-old actor said she hated constantly being written about but has given up trying to fight it. “What bothers me the most is that the media doesn’t even bother to listen to my side of the story. I have tried to put across my point several times, but it falls on deaf years.”
Katrina is no stranger to link-ups with some of Bollywood’s leading men. She has recently been linked with actor Ranbir Kapoor, with whom she starred in Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani, “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t bothered by all this talk, but I have realised that there isn’t much I can do about it. I wouldn’t like being written about so much,” Katrina added in dismay.
People in the industry are comparing her to perfectionist Aamir the story goes that Katrina, is the only female character in Rajniti, which she is very excited about, the actress is the focal point of the script and has a lot of lines. But Katrina has been taking her Hindi dialogue delivery lessons seriously and is hell-bent on getting the accent and pronunciation right.
Now comes the twist. On one particular day during her recent stint in Bhopal, Katrina found herself staring at sheets of lengthy dialogues and realised she would need an extra day to prepare if she was to get it right. So, she went up to Jha and told him about her predicament. And even before the filmmaker, who’s had enough grief with this film, could bat an eyelid, the professional girl volunteered to compensate him for her’s day’s shooting expenses.
Jha confirmed the story. “It was a truly professional gesture and I’m very touched,’’ he said. Of course, he didn’t take the money and gave his actress the one extra day she needed. Only to be rewarded on day two. Unit hands say that Katrina had taken it as a challenge and knew every dialogue pat. She surprised everyone present on the set with her spoken lines. And so, continues to be the flavour of the season.
November closes with Priyadarshan's DE DANA DAN, which along with the cast of HERA PHERI, has Katrina paired opposite her lucky charm, Akshay Kumar. The film should definitely close November on a high for the Hindi film industry, providing it with the much-needed successes.
