Ranbir Kapoor is on a hattrick this year. He looks all set to close 2009 with yet another solo hit Rocket Singh Salesman of the Year. Two successful films in a row have set the trade thinking of Ranbir Kapoor as the next big thing in Bollywood. He’s poised. He has his own style. He doesn’t imitate anyone, not even his father. When you have a personality, which is like your parents but is still unique, it works in short Ranbir has the ability to stand out in a crowd of actors.
This year Ranbir was seen with Konkona Sen Sharma in hit movie Wake Up Sid and later teamed up with Katrina Kaif in romantic comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, winning the hearts of audiences and now comes Rocket Singh in which he plays Harpreet Singh Bedi, who has just graduated with embarrassing marks. But that doesn't stop him from dreaming about an exciting career. The film has been made under the Yash Raj Films' banner. Ranbir hopes that Rocket Singh..., which is his last release of the year, repeats the success stories of his previous releases and ends the year on a happy note.
"Some films work, some don't. Wake Up Sid worked in a capacity it was meant to work. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani was a big grosser. As an actor I would like every film of mine to do well. It feels great, as the hard work you put in this whole year has been paid off. With Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, I hope it does better than better," said Ranbir.
Asked if this back-to-back success was adding to the pressure on him, he said, "There is no pressure at all. I am an actor, I don't believe in genes or living in what my great grandfather or my parents have achieved. Here I am as an individual and that's how audiences are going to perceive me, not as someone's son or grandson. If my films are doing well, I would like to take some credit for it," he added.
As an actor do you think you need to sell your talent? “Not at all. One thing I will never indulge in is PR. I truly believe that PR is the death of an actor. Look at Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand. They went on and on for 25 years, just on the basis of their work. And fans did not get tired of seeing them because they weren't all over the place. In the end, it's about the films you do. Not about what you do in your personal life, which awards you bag or which NGO you support.”
How is the association with Yash Raj Films you seem to be becoming a new favourite here “This is family. My mom and dad have done so many films with them. And now I am doing some interesting work here. The banner's biggest strength is its working environment. Despite being such a huge name, they don't behave like or perceive themselves as some hotshot corporate entity. Yash Raj Films has the personal touch.”
Ranbir may have gained heartthrob status with his lover boy roles but the actor is equally excited about his upcoming film Rajneeti, where in his own words, he plays "a mature man" for the first time. "I have usually acted in coming-of-age dramas or done lover boy roles in my films so far but Rajneeti is my first mature role. It is a dark political thriller and also my first character with grey shades," say’s Ranbir.
Ranbir teams up with Katrina Kaif again in Ranjneeti and the actor describes the Bollywood beauty as phenomenal. "Katrina is phenomenal. She has this undying energy on the set. She is so successful but never takes it for granted. From not knowing the language to becoming one of the biggest star, she has achieved a lot. I have tremendous respect for her as an artiste," Ranbir gushes about his co-star.
So what is his charm? “I am just a happy person, I like talking to people who interest me. You just have to listen to people; I guess that’s what charm is. It’s not about corny lines; it’s not about the looks that you give somebody. It’s only about the attitude to and the conversations that you have with somebody.”
Did he ever rebel? “Not majorly, but I do believe that I have a rebel in me. I really don’t like to be told what to do.”
You are most written about for your affairs ... “It really hurts me that my affairs are being written about. I am suddenly acquiring this new image. It is not me. I have been in very few relationships in my life. Few have worked, few haven’t. And I am extremely sad about the ones, which haven’t worked. I am not this lover boy people think I am. The character I did in Bachna Ae Haseeno is not me. I am quite a romantic at heart, but at the same time, being in a relationship or being with a girl is not my priority. I do believe there are great things in store for me. I need to believe that if I need to move ahead. Women are lovely. I love and respect them, but that’s not my true calling in life. My true calling is cinema and acting.”
