Kareena Kapoor was the original choice for Karan Johar's much hyped remake of Agneepath but now Karan has signed Priyanka Chopra to play the female lead opposite Hrithik Roshan. Kareena reportedly lost out on the film because Hrithik’s wife Sussanne was not comfortable with the two working together after they were linked to each other in the past.
Say's a source “Karan was very keen on having Hrithik and Kareena play the lead in his film but Sussanne put her foot down.” Apparently, Kareena was very upset at losing out on the film but when Karan explained the situation to her she tried to understand.
“Kareena and Karan have been friends for long; Bebo was naturally upset when she heard that Karan was signing Priyanka instead of her. However, when Karan explained Hrithik’s unwillingness to work with her because of Sussanne she understood his predicament,” adds the source.
This isn’t the first time that Bebo has lost a film because of Hrithik’s refusal to work with her. She was Zoya Akhtar’s first choice for Luck By Chance. Hrithik had agreed to do the film but when he later found out that Zoya was planning on signing Kareena opposite him he suddenly discovered he had date problems and kept delaying the film. A harried Zoya finally got the hint.
Incidentally this is also not the first film that Bebo has lost out to Priyanka; Karan had initially signed Bebo for Dostana but Abhishek Bachchan’s reluctance to work with her stole the project from her. Bebo was also offered Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion but she unfortunately she let it slide by and Priyanka immediately snapped it up. The latter even won a National Award for it.
Both Dostana and Fashion have established Priyanka among the top bracket of heroines, many in the industry feel that Agneepath will make her position even stronger.
Not to be defeated easily Bebo has grabbed Karan Johar’s other home production where she is paired opposite dashing Imran Khan. But isn’t she going back to a size zero on Karan’s instructions? “No!” she explodes. “This size zero nonsense has been going on for too long. I’m grateful to Shah Rukh (Khan) for taking the mantle away for me. Ever since he got into those body suits for RA.One, people have been discussing his weight loss rather than mine.”
She, however, insists that his lean look is perfect for superhero SRK. “I saw the rushes recently and he looks so hot,” she gushes. “We have an Italian director of photography (DOP) and he has captured my best features too. Both RA.One and Saif’s (Ali Khan) Agent Vinod are big summer releases and I’m looking forward to them.”
The film with Imran, she says, is one of the best scripts she’s read in four years. “It’s a riot. If it’s made the way it is written, you will be rolling in the aisles too. Both Imran and I have performance driven roles,” she asserts.
Bebo is supposedly, also teaming up with Imran’s ‘mamu’ Aamir Khan, after the blockbuster 3 Idiots. “I’d die to do a film with Aamir, preferably a love story. But there’s nothing on the cards at the moment. And given Aamir’s pace, by the time he’s ready for a Kapoor, it will probably be Samaira (sister Karisma Kapoor’s daughter) and not me opposite him,” she jokes.
Maybe not Aamir, but Kareena is ready for another Khan—Salman. But she has great hopes for Bodyguard. “I saw Salman for the first time on the sets of Lolo’s (Karisma) Jagruti, I was only 10 then, he’s been one of my favourite actors since,” she reminisces.
Recently, Salman’s sister, Alvira, approached her with the Bodyguard role. “She wanted someone who could act. Nayantara, who did the Tamil original, was super and I was like, ‘Oh-my-God, I hope I measure up.’ But I’m sure when you see me on screen, you’ll think the role was written for me,” she promises.
This Diwali she will be taking the Golmaal franchise forward. She plays ‘chawanni chaap’ Daboo in Golmaal 3 and says, “Few heroines would have dared to do a role like this.”
With so many biggies in her kitty missing out on a film with Hrithik is whose loss only time will tell.
