On the his success and Failures
Eleven years into the business; are you still affected by praise and criticism?
That will always be the case. When people criticise you (I have been getting a lot of that until Dum Maaro Dum came) it shows that they still care. That is the sign of success. Indifference is what kills an actor. Extreme love and extreme hate are welcome. At least, you evoke a response. It means you still matter. What more can a performer ask for? You know that proverbial thing, love him or hate him, but you can't ignore him.
Was he disheartened when RAAVAN, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY and GAME failed at the box-office?
Of course, I was! It breaks you completely. I was shattered when RAAVAN failed. I couldn't shoot for the next 10 days. I lost confidence after RAAVAN flopped. Prior to RAAVAN, people had praised my restrained performance in PAA. With RAAVAN, they said he doesn't know how to act. The media doesn't make you forget your failures. ! In the first place, how many actors would say 'No' to Mani Ratnam, Ashutosh Gowariker and Farhan Akhtar/Ritesh Sidhwani backing the projects If given a chance, I'd love to work with them again. Who wouldn't?
So, was the passionate reaction to Raavan a little demoralising?
Not a little, you’re totally demoralised. Luckily, I was working with Rohan Sippy then on Dum Maaro Dum and he understood it. An actor has to stand up for his films, whether it is a hit or a flop.. But I’ve also realised that though actors are the face of a film, they’re actually the most powerless people in a film. The minute you give your shot, it’s over and done with and you’ve got nothing to do with it. The director has a vision, the editor has a vision, the background score will be somebody else’s vision, the sound mixing will be somebody else’s.
Media is quick to write ‘Abhishek Bachchan once again going through a lull in his career’does he find this unfair?
I know 10 to 20 actors who’ve had more than 10 flops in a row and it’s never called a lull. My last hit was Paa but they’ll say, ‘no that was your father’s movie. Why? Dostana was a hit, but no, that was John’s. And then two films don’t do well and people say, he’s going through a bad phase. Everybody said that the price of Raavan was `90 crore. What they very conveniently left out was, for that price they bought three films, a Tamil, a Telugu and a Hindi film. So if you divide `90 crore by three, it means the Hindi film was sold at `30 crore. Raavan’s business in Hindi alone if you check today is `38 crore. So from which angle was there a loss.

On his four years of rocking marriage life...
It’s been four years of marriage and there’s a lot of happiness evident in the partnership.
What’s it been like these four years? No regrets?
Good fun, I have enjoyed myself. I wouldn’t have got married if I had even an iota of doubt or regret.”
When you have an anniversary do you do special things, go out or something?
Of course we plan something but not this year.
So do you give each other presents and stuff like that?
No. We don’t give presents on our anniversary. We spend quality time together. I think that’s the greatest gift we can give each other.
Considering you yourself is a celebrity, you are comfortable walking the red carpet at Cannes or attending a world premiere as Aishwarya’s husband. Always perfectly supportive does it comes to you naturally?
Why don’t you ask the women when they accompany their husbands? Why is only the husband asked this question when he accompanies his wife? Aishwarya is my wife. If it’s her premiere I will gladly go to it. I will be proud of it or if she’s walking the red carpet and if she has asked me to go with her, I would gladly accompany her. I am very happy to support my wife and celebrate her in every way because she does the same for me. I don’t think anybody asks her or I don’t think she questions herself before she has to come to any event of mine. So why should I? What other people have to say about it doesn’t bother me at all. I have seen my father do it. Be it my mother’s movie premiere or an event of hers, Pa is there. So maybe that’s why it’s never been an issue with me, I’ve never thought about it.
Does he gets upset when asked about his plans of being a dad?
I don't understand why everyone is so bothered or excited about it. Now, it's reached a level where, you know, I'm like, 'Guys, can you let it be? It's my personal life.' And secondly, it's not like something I can hide. Tomorrow, if Aishwarya is pregnant, it's not like we can lock her away and say, 'You are not going to come out in public or something’. We both believe that these things are blessings from God, and will happen when they have to happen. It's going to be the happiest day in our lives. And I think I'll make a very good father.

On Mother Jaya Bachchan
Is there anything special you would like to say about your mother?
Well, I am who I am because of my mother. I owe everything to her. I can’t do anything without her till
date.
You’d say that even after marriage?
Ya, most definitely, and what’s wonderful is that
Aishwarya and Ma are as close as I am to my mom.
You never had to go through saas-bahu tension?
No, never. They gossip and chat more than I talk to my mother. They get along like a house on fire.
Who gives you the best pep talk?
I’ve quite a few people, but I think the best one is by my wife.
On superstar Father Amitabh Bachchan
Did your father like you in DMD?
Dad hasn't said much to me in the last few days. He does not like me because I am overworking him. You see I am the producer of Bbuddha and I have been making dad work overtime. He is doing action after nine years; post Khakee.
Sounds good!
Yes, I am fed up of Amitabh Bachchan playing the ageing patriarch and joining his hands and saying sorry. For me, Amitabh Bachchan doesn't say sorry. He doesn't get mad, he gets even. He may be older today but I want to see the fire in him. An entire generation has not experienced the glory of Amitabh Bachchan on the big screen. For them he is KBC uncle. Bbuddha will change the perception. You will see glimpses of the angry young man in his role. Wait till my publicity campaign starts. It will rock.

Golden words from Paa..
He told me to “Stand tall.” Take it on the chin and make sure your chin is tough enough to take it.
