"There was a certain amount of mental preparation about being uninhibited and being unapologetic about being
uninhibited... But I have enjoyed it." Say’s Vidya.
The character in the film is fearless. She has no restraint, she is carefree and colourful girl. Some may feel she is shameless, it’s a very bold film “Of course it is a bold film because she is a bold girl. She feels that her body is great and people like to see it so why not show it. She is not self-conscious. She does not hesitate, that's why it's not vulgar. If you are conscious, you will look vulgar. Every woman is sensuous; I got a chance to bring out my sensuousness in this film.”
Known for her poise and grace in "Parineeta" and "Paa", Vidya had to be fearless in this film, how did she prepare for the role “I must say this about Silk -- she was very ahead of her time. Today girls are in complete command of their lives and sexuality and they are unapologetic about it. Silk was like that back then, which is why she was misunderstood. People exploited that in a wrong way, but she took pride in what she did, she was never ashamed of what she was doing. It was only about being completely free, fearless and uninhibited. I have enjoyed exploring that side of me.” |

You started off as a demure actress. You tried commercial films, you have played a temptress and sensuous woman too “I like this variety. I am very grateful that I am getting the chance to play different people, not just Vidya Balan again and again. I am not interested in that. What is interesting for me is that directors are coming to me with all kind of roles. There are no limitations. It is all part of being an actor. I like playing completely different people. It is very exciting.”
Will this voluptuous Vidya change the trend in Bollywood “I think it should. It is wonderful to be a woman. We are women and it is necessary that we look like women. If you look like a chessboard, what is the pleasure in it? Then you should have been a man instead. I had to gain weight for this; I happily did that.”
Ask her if she was anytime wary or apprehensive of playing the character and she confidently replies, "I've never enjoyed being a woman more than in The Dirty Picture. It celebrates a woman like a rainbow in all her colours". |

Vidya admits that the role in Dirty Picture is completely opposite of what she has done onscreen so far. Even her role of a bad girl in `Ishqiya` pales into comparison "I loved the script and was almost shocked that they (Milan and Balaji) thought of me. I was shocked and thrilled becuase she is so unlike me. Silk Smitha’s sexuality is on your face. It is almost offensive.”
The 33-year-old star is playing another emotionally challenging role in Sujoy Ghosh`s Kahaani, "Sujoy Ghosh (director) just gave me one line idea of the story while we were discussing about another project but then he kept on adding to it. He told me that he was writing the script with me in mind. He finally came up with the script and I had no option but to say yes. It is about this pregnant woman who comes from London in search of her husband but while you think it is one emotional journey it is much more thrilling. The film defined hard work for me." she adds. |
