You became the first superhero of Bollywood with 'Krrish' but you recently said you were not worthy enough to reprise the role in the upcoming sequel. Why?
It is a good thing that people think of me as a superhero. Two months back I did not feel like superhero. I took my 'Krrish' jacket it did not fit me. I had to get into best shape health wise. I had to achieve a pain free body, I was like damaged goods...knee, elbow, shoulder. All injured. My dad was like should we make 'Krrish' now or should we make it in 2013 but I was sure that if we don't make it now then it will not happen. I hunted for best trainers from UK...I had ten weeks of transformation. I lost 10 kgs in 10 weeks.
Is it true that you wanted to play villan in Krrish sequel now essayed by Vivek Oberoi?
When I heard the script I wanted to play the hero and the villain. I wanted to play double role. I pushed dad to let me do both things..I nudged him...I used to tell him there is no actor to do it. But then he was like we will get someone and he signed Vivek. When I saw him (Vivek) giving the shot he was too good in that role. I couldn't have done justice to it. I am happy my father stopped me from doing it.
You are taking a huge risk by trying to step into the shoes of Amitabh Bachchan in the remake of Agneepath. What inspire you to take this project.
When Karan approached me, I said I don't want to do a remake, why destroy the sanctity of a classic? That, too, in a film like Agneepath in which Mr Bachchan has done an amazing job. Karan Johar, being a friend, just forced me to hear the script. I was absolutely shocked when I heard the narration; that script went through all the layers; it touched me, even though I am an actor who does not want to work in remakes. It just broke through all the barriers and hit me hard. When the narration was over, I knew I had to do this film. The moment you see my Vijay, that comparison will go away.
Did Sanjay Dutt's menacing looks ever scare you during the shot?
Yes, actually, sometimes I would think is this really Sanju sir? What has happened to him? Twice he looked at me with so much anger and gave me such a dirty stare that I got out of my character! He was so much into his character that I was taken aback. I thought what's wrong with him? I had to make myself understand that it is just acting. There was Gabbar Singh, then Mogambo and now it will be Kancha.
You have acted in many films. Which character is closest to your heart?
I think Ethan from Guzaarish. Whoever performed that role would have had to be that real because you meet people who are ill like that and when you meet them you have to feel real in your heart.

How is your relationship with your father?
I think we have a beautiful relationship. We don't need words -- I understand his mind very well. I can tell what he wants to say just by studying his expressions. And it works both ways. I worked with him as an assistant for six years, and I live with him. I have watched him very
closely.
No cynicism, no regrets after these many years in a competitive industry?
No. I think it's a very foolish thing to look back at your life and have regrets for anything that you do. You should tell yourself that at that time, for that place, I did the best with what my instincts provided me. Now you're wiser. As long as you can attach a reason to your failure, you'll learn, you'll grow wiser.
Why we've never heard of Hrithik, the hunk, ever getting into a fight?
I think you have to be the most foolish person, and the weakest person, to get into a fight. The only time you have to raise your hand is if there is injustice being done in the present, right there, where I am. If a lady has been wronged, then I will raise my hand. There is no other situation where you need to raise your hand.
Does your wife subscribe to this no-ego ideology?
Yeah... Now she does (laughs). It's taken a lot of time. Now we are in a state where I think she understands, even looks to me for advice if she is in a situation where she feels like attacking back. I'm the one who calms her down. Instinctive aggravation is what creates most of our warring, whether in the four walls of our house or at the
world-level.
As a superstar you have no deficit of money. Doesn't it make it easier to have a philosophical take on things?
I have a good understanding of how important money is. And now that I have children, I want to gather as much of it as I can, yes. But I know what it means. For me, it is also a means to help people. I can never say no to anyone, and if I am in a position to help, I help. I have seen my father struggle for 20 years. I know what it is like to have no money at all. We were thrown out of our building because we couldn't pay the rent. And then for about six months, we lived at my nani's house. My father was too embarrassed to live there, and so he stayed with a friend. And as soon as he got some money, he got this place, and he just had to get us into our own place. So, for the first four nights, I slept on the floor with my family in a house without any furniture and without fans. Those are the memories that keep me grounded. |
