| While a lot of filmmakers like Imtiaz Ali and Sanjay Leela Bhansali feel that Deepika is cut out for classic roles, the actress is game for more fun roles “Trust me, comedy is not easy. Getting the comic timing right is not an easy job. For me, the effort in a comedy is the same as in a drama. People might think a Vishal Bhardwaj film is harder to do than a Rohit Dhawan film. But for me both films are equally challenging. I do want to do films that harness well my capabilities as an actor. Two years from now, if all I am remembered is for how good I looked then I don’t have much to look forward to. Look at Kajol. She is married with children and yet people flock to see her films.”
She was always open about her love life but now she declines to entertain any questions about her personal life “Yes, I have been open about a couple of my earlier relationships. And yes, in one of my relationships, I was not given enough respect. The world need not know about whats going on in my life. I have come to the conclusion that I can not keep feeding the curiosity about my life.”

Incidentally, like her boyfriends, her tattoos too have been a subject of discussion “ I got them done because I wanted to. If I had wanted to hide them, then I would not have done in places where they are so obviously visible. If the cameras want to focus on them, they can do so by all means. I do the tattoos to please myself, just as I dress up to please myself. I am my own person. I live alone and I am not answerable to anyone.” She firmly declares.
The diva was shooting for friend Ayan Mukerji’s film Ye Jawani Hai Deewani (YJHD). She’s quite gung ho about the project and begins to chirp nice things about it, “Most of the people in the unit are young and hence there is a campus like atmosphere. Our first schedule was fabulous.”
Working with Dharma Productions is a dream come true for the actress as she was besotted by the banner ever since she was a little girl. It’s all about believing in your dreams, as they say. “As a child, I used to think, if only I could be part of a Dharma film. In the last four years, whenever Karan Johar announced a new film, I would think, ‘Why didn’t he sign me for it?’ And one day, suddenly I got a call from Karan, and he told me that he wanted to meet me for a film, which Ayan was directing. I am happy that I am a part of YJHD.” |

| Deepika has been cast opposite Ranbir in YJHD. It’s the first time they are working together after their break-up. She’s all praises for her ex and says Ranbir has definitely grown as an actor. “He won all the best actor awards last year. But that hasn’t gone to his head. I can’t see much change in his attitude.”
In an actor’s profession, one never knows when one comes face to face with one’s past. Actors live in a constant state of déjà vu. And Deepika has sort of experienced this. Her profession and destiny have brought her face to face with the man whose name is still tattooed on her nape. She sighs and says she’s moved on, and so has Ranbir. “We’re happy being where we are. If we were uncomfortable with each other, we wouldn’t have worked together on this film. Right? Whatever has passed is past. Now we are friends.”
There are different meanings to the term, ‘We’re just friends…’ but it’s impolite to dwell on that, especially when there are speculations that her romance with the Kingfisher scion Siddharth Mallya is over for now. Theirs was a much public relationship, the duo reportedly kissed in public during an IPL match. The media went to town crowing that she’s found the perfect beau on rebound after her breakup with Ranbir. Deepika doesn’t confirm or deny rumours about her breakup with Siddharth. “He’ll always be my friend. Just because we are not seen together, it doesn’t mean that we are not friends anymore.” |

| The actress changes tracks and announces out of the blue that she’s single. She giggles “Yes, you’ve heard this right. I am SINGLE.” It’s best not to get your blood up, as she douses the ardour of a million hot-blooded males by declaring that she’s definitely NOT ready to mingle. “I’m under no pressure at all to be with somebody. I’m enjoying this phase of my life. Being in a relationship is a state of mind in any case.”
From speculating about her relationships, we move to speculation of a different kind. There have been rumours that she’s been paid `5 crore to endorse a soap brand. She reacts to it all with a touch of sang froid. “I’m getting whatever is my brand value. I’m not comfortable talking about money. I’m the face of that particular product, and my job is to be the bridge between the consumer and the brand. I’m happy that the brand is also happy with this association.” Saying everything without giving away anything, that’s being ambassadorial all right.
Deepika Padukone has just signed a Tamil film, Kochadaiyaan opposite Tamil Superstar Rajnikanth. Is the ad deal a windfall of her being the new Rajni heroine? “I don’t know. I don’t think you can call it the effect of one film. I have done so many films in my career and this seems to be the result of all of them put together.” A lot of actresses must be jealous about Deepika’s good fortunes as Rajnikanth himself suggested her name to his daughter Saundarya, who is producing the film. The actor marvels at her good fortune. “Rajni sir is a humble man. He asked me to be a part of Kochadaiyaan, which was a matter of great honor for me. I am eagerly looking forward to work with him.”
Deepika considers herself lucky that she’s managed to work with not one but two legends – Rajnikanth and star of the millennium Amitabh Bachchan. She’s humbled by the fact that she’s breathed the same air as her icons. She trills like Christmas has come early for her, “No doubt it is an achievement for me. I worked with Amitji in Aarakshan. He played my father in the film. Now, I am working with Rajni sir. More than an achievement, it is a dream come true for me. We have grown up following the works of these legends.”
Apparently, her former boyfriend Nihar Pandya is going to star in a film based on her life. Deepika shrugs off the implied nuisance. “I don’t want to comment on it. My best wishes are with them.” |
