| Once
tagged as a flop star, Abhishek Bachchan has proved
that he is a star after giving three successful films
in 2005, Bunty aur Babli, Bluffmaster and Sarkar. Not
only has Abhishek shown to the world that he is an
actor of superior calibre but has also emerged as a
style icon. Elle magazine has chosen him as the most
stylish person of the year and CNN's has designated
him as the entertainer of the year. 2005 undeniably
belonged to Bachchan Junior and 2006 looks promising
too. |

You
went through a bad patch in your career and things
are obviously looking up for you now. How good
does that feel?
When
things weren't too hunky dory some time back, I
was compelled to pause, reflect and ask myself if
I was in the right job. Today things are
different. I don't feel as nervous and intense as
I used to. I'd like to believe that I've come a
long way, proven a lot and signed up some
interesting projects with a broad spectrum of
directors. Yet there are always times when I
question what I am doing and myself! |

Suddenly
in the last one-year you have become a pinup
favourite?
How do I explain it? I don't even try to explain
it. Aditya Chopra once told me, very seldom does
the audience decide to like someone. No point in
questioning it. Just be thankful and work extra
hard to keep the audiences' faith intact. I'll try
my best not to disillusion those who've faith in
me.

It
could have something to do with the variety of
roles you did in 2005?
No,
they are just being kind. I think there are
artistes out there who have done far better work
than me during the year. I don't think I am the
most entertaining actor or the most stylish
person. But like I said, there's no point in
analysing these things. I am trying to improve
myself. Because I know there are people who are
far more stylish and entertaining. |

Which
was your best film in 2005?
I
liked all my films. And I am equally proud of all
of them. It's difficult to differentiate because
you work hard in all your films. After all it’s
your own work.
Bluffmaster
did extremely well in US. How does that feel?
I
was happy to know that the first week's
collections of Bluffmaster in the US were $160,000
dollars. In the second week, the collections went
up by almost $60,000. That's practically unheard
of. It definitely feels good to see that the
audience like your work |
Bluffmaster
was your first film with Priyanka Chopra.
What was the experience like?
She
is a very talented girl and great fun to
have on the sets. It was great working with
her. |

What
was the biggest high of the year?
Dad's performance in Black! It was undoubtedly the
biggest high for me. I wouldn't single out any of
my own performances because none of them were
anywhere near Dad. And at the end of the year,
Black was selected by Time magazine as one of the
10 best films of the year. That's simply amazing. |
You've
worked with your father in a number of films
now. What is it like?
I
am stunned and speechless. I tend to freeze
or fumble before him. Watching him work is a
revelation in itself. |

You
are doing Goldie Behl's film?
Yes. And my decision to do his second film isn't an
emotional one. He hasn't made a film since "Bas
Itna Sa Khwab Hai". Goldie was busy consolidating
his TV software company. That's why he took a bit of
time to start another film. I enjoyed his second
script. And I see him as a very, very capable
director. I'm looking forward to working with him
again.
You
share a special bond with Rohan Sippy. Is it because
his father directed your father in SHOLAY?
The Sippys are family for us. Rohan & I go back a
long way. He is my childhood friend. We understand
each other. I would go out of my way to do anything
for him and vice versa. I was in his first film and
there’s no way I wouldn’t be in his second!
What
was the most special thing about your role in
‘Sarkar’?
“The
most special thing was working with dad. Like I said
before that the greatest thing about working with
Amitabh Bachchan is that he makes you perform better.
Just by being in the same frame with him, you
automatically perform; because he is such a wonderful
actor – you become a better actor.”
Can
acting be taught?
I don’t think so. A germ of it has to be inborn.
Someone can teach you how to develop and polish it.
Elle
magazine has chosen you as the most stylish person of
the year?
It's
very humbling...
Do
you think you're stylish?
No.
It's basically teamwork. I have to thank all the
people who work from behind the scenes to create that
illusion. If I am being labelled stylish the credit
must go to my personal stylist Falguni Thakore and Abu
Jani-Sandeep Khosla. These are the people who do most
of my clothes. I don't have any hand in this. Frankly
I don't think I'm fashionable. But thank you very
much.
Also,
CNN has designated you the entertainer of the year?
I am
thoroughly flattered. I don't agree with that at all.
How
is it going with JP Dutta and Umrao Jaan in Jaipur?
It is
wonderful to get back in front of JP Saab's camera. It
is like coming home. Shooting this film is a great
deal of fun.
And
Aishwarya?
She is
a thorough professional. So am I.
How
was it grooving to your own songs live to audience in
flimfare awards?
As long as the show goes well it really doesn’t
matter. As long as the audiences enjoyed the show,
it’s a super success.
All credit to Shiamak Davar and ‘Shiamak Davar
Institute’ of performing arts. They are brilliant
choreographers as they make better dancers out of you.
If you want to learn dance just go to Shiamak.”
It’s
your moment on glory...how does it feel?
On top
of the world! Fantastic! I am really happy that they
recognized the work everyone has done in ‘Sarkar’.
I am especially happy for Ram Gopal Verma, I think he
had done a fantastic film; he’s a brilliant director
and its sheer pleasure to work with a director like
him. The highlight was Dad winning two awards, and he
truly deserved it! I am so thrilled that people
recognized that he’s the best!
What
are you looking forward to in 2006?
Quite
a lot of things, but mainly I want to do more exciting
work. I'll continue to work hard and leave the rest to
god and the audience. When
is the
much talk about marriage with .......?
You will know about it soon. (smiles) |
