Bipasha
Basu The Bong bombshell finally came out of the shadow of
being just a glamorous doll to create her own identity
with a powerhouse performance in Madhur Bhandarkar’s
film ‘Corporate’.
From the chic urban queen in Corporate
to the wild untamed lioness in Omkara, Bipasha
Basu reveals quite a range in this year and very soon she
will be seen in a new avatar in Yash Raj Films' Dhoom
2.
With
big film heading for release does it feel like a second
coming?
“I don’t know,” she clears her throat. “I
see myself as a new person today and I’m projecting
that. It’s a new phase in my career also. I was trying
to prove myself as an actress, which I have done. The
films may not have worked, people might not believe it,
but I’ve proved to myself that I’m an actor. Now I
want to work with people who are known for their work, and
established actors, because I’ve worked with newcomers a
lot. Before I give up acting, I want to work with names
and learn from them,” she admits.

What
made her do other insignificant roles in films like Phir
Hera Pheri? “Being an actor I have to do insignificant
roles, sometimes for money and banners. I want to be
financially independent when I quit the industry after
marriage. I will never ask for money from the man I
marry,” she says. So is the man she’s hinting is John?
“It can be anyone. Who knows about the future, but I
will never ask my husband for money,” she retorts.

Bipasha
remains in confession mode as she says; “I’ve been
unfair to my fans. I was liked in ‘Ajnabee’ and
‘Jism” as a glamorous woman. I tried to push the
glamour away and prove that I’m an actress.
I tried to carry films on my shoulders, which were not too
big.” Asked if now she’s trying to play
it safe, “Most of the people play it safe all the time.
How many of them are successful? Most people do it the
other way round than what I have done. Can you believe it;
I haven’t done a single conventional love story? I
haven’t done multistarrers before, which everyone does.
Now I want to do what I haven’t done before.”
Sex
appeal is one aspect that cannot be taken away from me. I
did always like to keep my sexy image because my audience
likes that about me,” she says matter-of-factly. “Many
glamorous girls have come into the industry and been
categorised as sex symbols. But I am Bipasha Basu. I can
never look like a tart, no matter what,” she asserts.

For
the record, Bipasha had rejected Rimii Sen’s
‘skimpy’ role in ‘Dhoom’. Thankfully she doesn’t
seem to have offended the moody Chopras, who have now
signed her for the sequel. “I thank Aditya Chopra for
it, that he’s a very gracious man. He didn’t mind that
I didn’t do ‘Dhoom’, and yet offered me the
sequel,” she gushes, "Aditya said, ‘It’s good that you
weren’t in the first, that’s why you are in ‘Dhoom
II’. The
film’s cast is an exciting proposition in itself. If
there’s Hrithik and Abhishek, then there’s Aishwarya
and Bipasha pitted with each other for the first time. It is an interesting casting,” she agrees. “I’d
like to see how I look with Ash on screen. We are very
different people, the kind of films we’ve done are
different. But I’m not threatened by working with
Aishwarya. I’ve worked with the biggest star, Mr.
Amitabh Bachchan. I have not been worried working with
nobodies. I am concerned about my work only,” she said.

From
splitting with John, to marrying him, to rumours of
link-ups the couple has, it seems people’s imagination
take flight time and again. “It doesn’t bother me at
all. John and I are the only two people who know what’s
going on between us, and we choose not to share it with
the world.” They can perceive it like that because the
two, who have both individually, bought houses, are moving
towards settling down. “One thing’s for sure, I’m
not getting married right away,” she declares. “I know
that I’ll quit acting when I get married. But it’s not
like I have decided that after meeting John. Even when I
split with Dino and was single for a year, nobody knew
that. But I knew it then that marriage is a commitment
I’d like to give myself totally. Marriage is just a
paper for me. It’s important, as per my values, but I
don’t need that paper now. I love John he loves me to
death. We’ll do anything for each other. We are in a
very mature relationship, marriage doesn’t really
matter,” she speaks from her heart.

A
rocking career, a boyfriend the nation drools over Bipasha
has the world at her feet. Reasons enough for anyone to be
proud of? “Well, I’m proud of the fact that today,
everyone, at least Indians all over the world know who
Bipasha Basu is,” she states individualistically.
Any
regrets?
“I
left education very early in life, that’s one thing I
regret. At the age of 17, I was flying high, seeing the
world, making my own money; enjoying independence. But not
everyone can handle it like me. I’m a very responsible
person. I’ve seen drugs all around me; I’ve seen
people abusing themselves. I have had the best-looking men
hitting on me all the time. I could have been the most
spoilt and lost woman in the world. At 17, you are not
that intelligent. I was naïve, but I was responsible. I
am a very good example to set for my sister. I have not
stooped low that I lose respect for myself. I have not
done things under pressure, but because I wanted to do
them. I am extremely proud of myself,” she sums up the
secrets of being the strong personality that Bipasha
Basu’s known to be.
