I have to ask you first, where has your beard gone?
The beard was there because of my role in the film Chak de India. I just finished shooting for it, so it’s gone now.

Was it bothersome? Were the kids complaining?
My daughter did not like it. In fact some other girls, too, said that it pricks when I kiss them.

You really like to be working all the time?
I don’t like anything better than that. There is no alternative to work. I find nothing nicer than working. Bhatt saab tells me that I am a workaholic. If I don’t work I get a headache and I feel depressed. I like to work round the clock all the time.

Do you like watching films as much as you like making them?
If I can watch them alone quietly it’s great. I get time in my car so I put a movie in my laptop and watch it. I don’t like to go out in a public place and watch a film. I watch my own films only once. But if you really ask me I would rather watch a film on DVD all alone in the dark environs of my car or my home.

When was the last time you got into a fight?
I don’t fight with anyone. I haven’t gotten into a fight for a long time really.

What is the worst piece of professional advice that someone has given you?
It has varied. I don’t know if it’s good or bad but a dear friend of mine Aziz (Mirza) asked me not to do Don. I was also told to cut my hair and to change my name because someone said that there couldn’t be a movie star by the name of Shah Rukh Khan.

What is the most odd piece of gossip that you have heard about yourself?
I don’t know if it’s odd any longer. People think that I’m a gay. Recently somebody asked me if I’m still in touch with my feminine side. They ask me why did I do the Lux ad and things like that. They are very sweet about it but I know where they are heading. I think there is a feminine side to me, as people like to assume. This might rank as their top most gossip. Then there was this gossip that I love fair women and that’s why I don’t cheat on my family at home. I go abroad and am seen with fair ladies. Then there was this about my house that I have no windows at home because I want to make sure that nobody sees me. Many more such things have been said about me. This just keeps going on and on.

Do you think that money can buy happiness?
It makes it easier to get happiness. I do believe in a material world to a certain extent. I think material happiness is quite an important step before you look for spiritual happiness. There are people who think the other way round. They might also be right. But in the kind of education and the world where I have grown up, and we all are growing up, a certain level of consumerism become a reality. I think it is okay to have a certain amount of material comfort. Beyond that, emotional happiness will only come if you re honest, clear and in love with your near and dear ones.

What works better with the kids? A yelling or pasting?
I never yell at kids. I just hug them hard and threaten them not to do something again. I think the yelling part should be left to the moms. Moms yell, fathers must laugh it off. I would never be aggressive with a woman or a little child. I would rather die before I raise hand on a little kid or a lady.

Why do you think it is the best thing for your kids to have a movie star dad?
They get a good amount of home videos to watch. If you really ask me, the only fear I have is if I would be able to see my children live out of the shadow of my name. Your face is all over the hoardings, everyone talks about you and people refer to you as ‘King Khan’ and ‘Baadshah of Bollywood’. I would want my children to grow up and do what they wish to in a field that they choose to step in. They should not have to use the shadow of their father’s name. I think that is a bit of a downer for a movie star’s children. I only wish if my son grows up to become a chemical engineer, he should be reckoned as Aryan Khan, the engineer and not as Shah Rukh Khan’s son.
