As
an actor, do you feel like a gold fish in a bowl?
In
the industry I’ve never felt like this. But
outside it’s very tough because people are
always comparing you to your image. Sometimes it
gets tiring competing with your image. I’m human
too. I need to de-stress, relax sometimes and
being a star is all about carrying yourself with
dignity, always smiling, always looking good. As a
human being that’s not always possible. You go
through ups and downs. There may be days when you
have a big blob on your forehead. |

Do
you ever feel insecure?
There
are very, very few times when I feel insecure. I
don’t have petty insecurities and yet sometimes
my insecurities are most petty. Like I go totally
mad when I have a pimple on my forehead. I have
very philosophical insecurities. I don’t want to
end up as a frustrated, lonely, broke aging star.
This industry no doubt has been great but you
can’t be here forever. The longer you are here,
the lonelier you get. Where I am right now is the
best time to be here. Then it’ll get from good
to bad to worse to lonely.

What
depresses you?
When
I start thinking about where our country is going and
that depresses me a lot. Then I start wondering whether
we’ll ever have a good quality of life, our roads ever
are good and whether our cities will ever be clean? Then
sometimes when I feel I’m putting on weight and
looking terrible I feel depressed.
Who’s
the most important person in your life today?
My
mother. My life revolves around her. She’s the one who
can make me feel so happy and she’s the one who can
make me feel so sad. She’s the one who can make me
feel completely secure and she’s the one who can make
me feel so lonely.
What
does friendship mean to you?
Friendship
means loving someone unconditionally. It means being
non-judgmental about the other person. And yet when they
do something wrong, you are the first to tell them.
Your
ideal man should be...
(Laughs)
Mine. (Laughs some more) And he certainly shouldn’t be
idle.

Are
you religious?
Of
course. But I don’t really believe in idol worship. I
don’t go to the temple every day. Once in a way I’ll
go to a temple when I feel like it but I’m not fanatic
about it. I know there’s God around me, in me. But I
also believe religion is more than just worshipping God.
The idea is to be a better person, doing good karma and
transmit good energy on this earth.
Do
you ever regret not having a normal life?
Sometimes.
But I think it’s very petty to say that. Because God
has given me so much and I’m very happy with what I
have. I’ve got more than I ever dreamt of. After that
to say that I long for a normal life would make me very
ungrateful.
What’s
the most embarrassing thing you’ve done?
It was
when I went to this award function. I was wearing this
lovely blue sari. Someone stamped on it and all the
pleats came off and I started fighting with the person
with my sari at my feet. Then someone told me to at
least tie up my sari before fighting.
Who
are you real-life heroes?
The one
and only real life hero of mine is my father. He was a
man of great insight, great intelligence and a huge
heart. He gave me every opportunity, sometimes even more
than my brothers, to spread my wings.
If
you had a choice what would you like to come back as?
I would
come back as the Prime Minister of India. Because I feel
somewhere I would make a difference. I would eradicate
all corruption and make this the most wonderful country
to live in.

What
do you dislike about your appearance?
Earlier
I would wish I was taller, I was this or that. But today
I’m happy the way I am. (Laughs) Because if I was
taller I wouldn’t have been able to work with half the
industry heroes.
What’s
your motto?
I have
two actually. One is live and let live and the second
one is: The fastest way to make your dreams come true is
to wake up.
What
are the three things you like about yourself as an
actress?
I perform from
my heart. I’m hard working and I don’t work on
Sundays.
