| John
Abraham:
"How
can I manage so many women? At least, give me a
gap!" |

It’s
not the dark dubbing studio that adds the bass. The deep
voice booming into the mike is already sexy. We realize
that John Abraham doesn’t only look sexy he sounds
that way too. So, when he emerges, one can’t help but
notice the lean, ripped torso. |

More
reason to bare the six-pack and roam shirtless
on-screen. “Not in Baabul,” he tells us,
almost sadly. “Ravi Chopra has given me a complete
makeover. In this one, I’ve been a good boy and
haven’t taken off my clothes at all. But it’s fun
being bad.” |
|

Talking
about ‘Body of work’, John is convinced that
even with shirt on, Baabul will touch the
hearts of millions. “What makes it special is
that it’s a progressive film. The director is
not confused about what he wants to say.” But
doesn’t it upset John that many were offered the
role he plays before he was zeroed in for it?
“It feels good that I was an option, even if it
was the last option. When I see the movie now,
I’m happy I did it.” |

Sharing
screen-space with legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Hema
Malini is only the icing on the cake? “Mr. Bachchan is
younger than most of the co-stars I know,” says Abe.
“It’s always fun working with him. I feel like his
son, he takes care of me and is a wonderful man. Hemaji
is the original dream-girl; she’s still so gorgeous; I
still have a crush on her. What I like most about Hemaji
is her bluntness. She calls a spade a spade. There is no
gray for her, there’s only black and white.”
With
remakes being the ‘in’ thing, which classic
character would JA like to portray, if given the chance?
“We don’t need to remake so many films. There’s
this herd mentality that goes on in the industry. When
one guy does a remake, others are quick to follow suit.
I’d rather avoid the clutter than be part of it,” he
confesses. While most seems to be going well for the
hunk, the actor hasn’t been excused from star-wars and
ego-clashes, of late. “Honestly, I’m seeing more of
it now than I ever did, so it makes me feel very good.
Because if people look at me as a threat, I assume
I’ve progressed.”

The
occasional link-ups, too, seem to make his life
extremely interesting. Provoked, he tells us, “Earlier
I used to get amused by it all and not pay much
attention. I still do not pay much attention to these
things, but I am no more amused by them. Save Rani
Mukherjee, I’ve been linked with most of my actresses,
the most recent ones being Mallika Sherawat during the
world tour and with Salaam-e-Ishq, it had to be
other extreme, Vidya Balan. The media must think I have
a varied choice in women ranging from one end of the
pole to the other. But I choose to be at the equator –
with Bipasha Basu - where it’s hot always! How can I
manage so many women? At least, give me a gap! I do
believe that my testosterone levels are very high but
not as high as the media seems to think.”

In
spite of his achievements, Johnny is humble and very
down-to-earth. Doesn’t he wish, sometimes, to play the
‘star’ off-screen, too? “I am playing Mr. Star in
my movies, but why should I do that otherwise?” he
questions, “I’ve always lived a very normal life;
I’ve normal people around me. Also, my strongest
connect is the audience. I don’t need to and will not
lose that. If they can build their dreams and hopes
around what a normal person like me has done, then why
not be an example? Because if John can, anyone can!”
