Outsiders believe your selective guest list will create a sharp divide between the Bachchans and the rest of the film industry...
Outsiders mean nothing to me. The film industry, friends, relatives, colleagues matter, and they understood my situation. The invitations went out from six celebrities/personalities, including my father, mother, Abhishek, Jaya, Aishwarya, Amar Singhji and myself. How do you compile a list to cover so many people? The invitees would have crossed 20,000. Where do you accommodate so many people? Hotels are impersonal and we didn’t want that. So what? The Bandra Kurla Complex, making the wedding like a film awards night? Sorry, no. But it was also my son’s wedding, and this was the most important day in his life, I could not take that moment away. So we struck a delicate balance by holding a small, intimate and close ceremony at home to which certain people, who were important and intimate and needed to be called, were called.
Is it true that Amar Singh vetoed some of the names on the guest list?
No, this is not true at all.
There are widespread rumours over why Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan were not invited...
I’ve already said if we called one from the film industry, we would have to call all. The people you have mentioned, they all understood my situation, and they called and wished us well.
Did the media frenzy and the fracas on the day of the wedding spoil what was a joyous celebration for you?
The fracas was unfortunate and not deliberate. The Black Cat commandos involved were assigned to protect Amar Singhji. I had no control over them. And I didn’t hire them. But on many occasions, the media was unfair. The cameramen chased our car and stopped it. This is illegal, a violation, and a driving hazard. The police asked us to provide vantage points from which the media could cover the baraat. We did, but yet, they blocked my gates and almost prevented the grihapravesh from happening.
The media believes Amar Singh is bad news for your distinguished image...
Amar
Singh ji is not a friend, he’s a member of my family, and I won’t stand a disparaging remark against him from anybody. If people believe my association with him is disgracing me, then I’m proud to be disgraced.
Have you sold the wedding rights to a foreign media house or channel? And if so, which one and for how much?
No, I’ve not sold it, and if an offer was made, I’d obviously reject it.
